Top Amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick Drops Out Of College
Most young amateurs would give their left testicle to be offered a place in a top US College golf program, but it seems Matthew Fitzpatrickâs golfing diary is so full, he has no time for it.
Last years US Amateur champion, 19, officially left Northwestern's golf program to prepare for his appearances at the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship.
"Based on the opportunities I have right now from a golf perspective, I feel it is important to dedicate 100 percent of my time to the game and have decided to withdraw from university in the U.S.," Fitzpatrick said in an interview.
Matt, who also won the low amateur at last yearâs Open, has not announced any plans to turn pro. His coach at Northwestern Pat Goss, who also moulded Luke Donald in his college days, was left stunned by the news.
âThe surprising part for us was how much his family valued education and how important it was to them during the recruitment at Northwestern,â Goss told Ryan Lavner. âHis family and Matt had nothing but espoused the value of education here.â
Is this folly or well calculated move given that Matt is destined to be a top class pro anyway? Iâm suspecting the latter.
