(Photo: Gary C. Klein/Sheboygan Press Media) The golf course proposed by Kohler Co. in the Town of Wilson would create 227 full-time jobs and generate an annual economic impact of $20.6 million, according to an economic impact study released Wednesday by the company. The study, performed by SB Friedman Development Advisors in Chicago, estimates that the golf course's three-year construction phase would create 95 full-time construction jobs and have a $12.5 million economic impact on Sheboygan County. Kohler Co. says it will make an initial investment of $25 million to build and develop the golf course. When the course is fully operational, 106 full-time equivalent jobs, or FTEs, would be created by Kohler Co. and another 121 FTEs would be created el

Michael Jordan Confirms Interest in Building Golf Course, But Says Slow Play ... - Golf.com

Just because His Airness might like to build his own Florida golf club doesnรข€™t mean he isnรข€™t happy with the one heรข€™s got. In an email to Golf.com, Michael Jordan acknowledged that the prospect of developing his own golf course รข€œintriguesรข€ him. But he denied that his interest was driven in any way by dissatisfaction with the Bearรข€™s Club, the luxe Jupiter club where he belongs. Last week, Golf.com exclusively reported that Jordan had secured the option on property in the Hobe Sound area, where he hoped to build an exclusive club with a small, handpicked membership of fellow athletes and friends. Sources with ties to Jordan and the Bearรข€™s Club said that MJรข€™s plans were driven partly by his frustration with pace of play at the Bearรข€™s Club. รข€œMichael likes to play fast and he canรข€™t stand it when people wonรข€™t let him through,รข€ a golf-industry insider who knows Jordan and who has spoken with several Bear's Club's members told Golf.com. รข€œT

The New Old-School Golf Shirt - Wall Street Journal

Growing up, Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown cringed at รข€œbacon collar,รข€ their term for when the corners of a collared golf shirt roll up. The collars they make at the Austin, Texas-based company they founded, Criquet Shirts, include removable collar stays, and the latest design refines the staysรข€™ angle. รข€œWe put the collar stay more at the front of the collar, to keep that front edge crisp,รข€ says Mr. Nachman. SDSU golf video has viewers cheering - U-T San Diego

It is 56 seconds of good theater. Fifty-six seconds of joyous enthusiasm and impressive athleticism. Fifty-six seconds that could have a longer lasting impact for the San Diego State womenรข€™s golf team than, well, 56 seconds. With their coach, Leslie Spalding, away recruiting in Florida, the Aztecs women produced a 56-second video of trick shots for a Back Nine Network contest for college teams. They joked with each other that if they got few thousand hits on the web theyรข€™d be ecstatic. They underestimated themselves, by many hundred thousand. The video hit YouTube on Feb. 15, and as of midday Monday it had been viewed more than 880,000 times. For anything involving college womenรข€™s golf, thatรข€™s a bit mind-blowing. รข€œGolf is cool now. My team is cool now,รข€ Spalding said between giggles. รข€œItรข€™s like womenรข€™s golf is not the coolest thing. But my girls work so hard and they are so committed, and theyรข€™re so competitive and so good and so fun, and I just think this gives the

Daily fantasy golf: The Honda Classic preview - USA TODAY

Image
(Brian Spurlock, USA TODAY Sports) PGA National (The Champion) is the home of this weekรข€™s The Honda Classic, held in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. One of the toughest stops on the circuit, it takes a special round to go low on this test of patience and precision. Holes 15, 16 and 17 รข€" รข€œThe Bear Trapรข€ รข€" can derail even the best prosรข€™ hottest rounds. The courseรข€™s bunkers were reshaped following last yearรข€™s event. Expect a composite score of 10-under to be in contention to win the event, and even par should be close to the cut line. Focus on golfers who are safe picks to make the cut, and remember the Celebration Bermuda grass gives roughly 20 yards of extra fairway roll. Scrambling isnรข€™t as important when there really is no such thing as a รข€œbad lieรข€ on this course, but exact approaches and crafty putting likely will determineร‚ the victor. Get in on the hot fantasy basketball action today!

A new app connects golf-course operators and advertisers to golfers - GolfDigest.com (blog)

Image
Cellphone use on the golf course is becoming more and more acceptable. As long as you're not answering calls as your partner swings, it's fair game. At some point during the round, the majority of golfers will likely check their phone if the facility allows it. One company is hoping to let the golfer, and the course, benefit from the prominence of cellphones in golf. Piper is gaining traction in retail stores and restaurants with the development and installation of small wireless beacons that can beam advertisements and messages to nearby phones with the companyรข€™s corresponding app. Last month Reunion Golf Resort in Orlando set up beacons around its facility, allowing the course to alert golfers to golf-shop sales and provide in-round discounts on food and beverages. That might mean 25 percent off a food or beverage item at the turn. Or a discount on a new driver or wedge in the golf shop. Piper started as a marketing tool for local retailers about four

Millionaire entrepreneur explains why cycling - and not golf - is the new ... - Business Insider

Wil Matthews You won't find serial entrepreneur Max Levchin on the links anytime soon. Every week it seems like there's a new story with the headline "Cycling Is The New Golf." While golf "still commands the highest portion of participants with household incomes above $100,000 among popular sports," according to Reuters, its popularity is waning,ร‚ and the number of courses has been on the decline in the US the past eight years. The Economist says "golf's appeal has become its undoing. Its meditative quality does not suit the frenetic pace of modern life." Many articlesร‚ point to cycling as รข€" yes รข€" the new golf. (That Tiger Woods is playing worse than ever before, and is now taking a break from golf, does not help.) So when I recently profiled Max Levchin รข€" who cofounded PayPal, sold Slide to Google for $228 million, sits on the boards of Yahoo and Yelp, and is now busy leading Affirm and Glo

Report: Miserable Old Man Michael Jordan Wants A Private Golf Course - Deadspin

Image
According to a report from Golf.com, Michael Jordan, who has now apparently reached the Old-Man-Potter stage of his life, is considering building his very own golf course in Florida because the country club that he frequents is no longer living up to his standards. Sources close to Jordan told Golf.com that the prospective course would be very exclusive, and that its members would be handpicked by Jordan himself. Of course, this all being considered for very Jordan-esque reasons: Sources say that Jordan's course ambitions have been fueled in part by his dissatisfaction with goings-on at the Bear's Club, the Jupiter club where MJ is a member and owns a lavish home. Those sources say that Jordan has grown frustrated with pace of play at the club. "Michael likes to play fast and he can't stand it when people won't let him through," said a golf-industry insider who knows Jordan and who has spoken wi

Report: Michael Jordan considering building his own golf course - Yahoo Sports (blog)

View gallery NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV - APRIL 05: NBA legend Michael Jordan hits a tee shot during ARIA Resort & Casiร‚ รข€¦ Michael Jordan is a busy man, and he doesn't have time for slow golf. The problem is that the pace at Bear's Club in Jupiter, Fla., where Jordan is a member and off which he owns a home, is too slow for the 52-year-old legend. What's his rumored solution? Building his own ultra-private golf club with a membership he can hand-pick. Jordan has secured an option to purchase a plot of land in Hobe Sound, just south of Medalist Golf Club, another Jupiter club which counts Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler among its members, according to Golf.com. รข€œHeรข€™s going to keep [membership] small, probably fewer than a hundred,รข€ a source told t

Report: Michael Jordan May Be Building His Own Private Golf Course - Bleacher Report

Michael Jordan, whom you may know as owner of the worldรข€™s most flattering ID card, may be adding a huge holding to his empire in the next few years. Sources close to Jordan claim His Airness is looking into the possibility of building his own private golf course in Florida, according toร‚ Golf.comรข€™s Josh Sens. Itรข€™s an odd idea, even for someone like Jordan with Scrooge McDuck money, considering he lives in The Bearรข€™s Club communityรข€"Jack Nicklausรข€™ private country club/course, which is one of the most exclusive golf establishments in America. Well, it would appear The Bearรข€™s Club is the reason behind Jordanรข€™s alleged plans. Sens reports that Jordan, a manically fast golf player, is tired of waiting for the slower players at this current course. So, like any profanely wealthy and crazy person, Jordan's workaround is to build his own course and country club.ร‚  Now, if youรข€™re vaguely familiar with Jordan as a human being, you know this

Snedeker's driver and putter valued at $34 - Golf Channel (press release) (blog)

Before dropping hundreds at the local golf shop, consider the equipment that Brandt Snedeker used to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Sunday. A 9-year-old putter. A 5-year-old driver. ร‚  And a 4-year-old set of irons. รข€œI donรข€™t like changing equipment,รข€ Snedeker said Sunday. รข€œI like to keep the variables to a minimum, so I know that itรข€™s me thatรข€™s messing up and not the clubs. It works better that way.รข€ His Bridgestone J40 irons are well-worn, as is his Odyssey White Hot XG Rossie, which Snedeker first discovered in 2005 on the Web.com Tour. Itรข€™s been in play since the รข€™06 season. What's in the bag: Brandt Snedeker Sticking with his 2010 TaylorMade Burner SuperFast driver is the most interesting decision, however. Thatรข€™s ancient by todayรข€™s standards, and heรข€™s likely robbing himself of some much-needed distance. Small airplane crashes on Layton golf course - fox13now.com

LAYTON, Utah รข€" Two people were extricated from a single-engine Cessna airplane after it crashed on a Layton golf course Saturday morning. The crash occurred at Valley View Golf Course, 2501 E. Gentile Street. There were two male occupants in the plane, officials stated. The pilot was treated for minor injuries on scene and the other occupant was taken to McKay Dee Hospital in fair condition. According to a press release, witnesses said they saw the plane glide into the area of the golf course and clip its wing on a tree. After clipping the tree, the plane spun face down and ended up coming to a rest in a sand trap. รข€œIt was extremely lucky that no patrons at this golf course sustained injuries due to the many patrons at this course today. The course also neighbors homes to the south on Gentile Street that could have been involvedรข€ said Doug Bitton, Layton City Fire Public Information Officer, in the press release. Pro golf pioneer Billy Casper dies at age 83 - CNN

Story highlights Golf great Billy Casper dies at 83 Casper's resume included three major titles and 51 PGA Tour events He was known as "Buffalo Bill" for his strict diet of organic meat and vegetables Follow us at @CNNSport and like us on Facebook Billy Casper, a pioneer of professional golf, died at the age of 83, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The PGA posted news of Casper's death as well, describing him as "one of the most prolific PGA TOUR winners in history and long considered among the sport's finest putters." His resume included three major titles and 51 PGA Tour events -- putting him seventh on the U.S circuit's all-time list. Known as "Buffalo Bill" for his strict diet of organic meat and vegetables that slimmed him down to a more athletic figure, Casper set about his golf career with the discipline he had learned in a four-year stint in the U.S. navy. Last year, Casper recalled the evolution of enormous prizes for top golfe

Utah golf legend Billy Casper dies at 83 - Salt Lake Tribune

Proud of his golf legacy, yet always humble and gracious, Casper most recently was honored in Utah in April, when he and Johnny Miller received Lifetime Achievement awards in the Governor's State of Sport Awards program. Health issues prevented him from attending the event, which featured an in-person tribute from Jack Nicklaus. "Billy was just so consistent, played so well all the time week after week," Nicklaus said that night. "I don't think he ever really got the credit he deserved." Casper ranks seventh in PGA Tour victories and was a five-time winner of the Vardon Trophy for the season's lowest stroke average. In his prime, Casper was overshadowed by Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, but he competed favorably against them. His recent autobiography is titled "The Big Three and Me." In 1966, Casper staged a remarkable rally to win the U.S. Open in San Francisco, although that tournament is remembered more a

The sobering truth about golf after Tiger Woods - New York Post

LA JOLLA, Calif. รข€" By the time it had become clear Tiger Woodsรข€™ glutes had deactivated and he was unable to reactivate them, he deactivated himself from the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday at Torrey Pines. And when Woods did that, you could feel the air leak out of the tournament like someone had stabbed a large balloon with a sharp knife. When Woods withdrew, it was as if the golf tournament had stopped in its place. It was as if nothing else mattered. Woods had been playing with Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel in Thursdayรข€™s opening round and, when he abruptly left, the five-deep crowd along the ropes that had been following the group thinned to little more than friends and family. รข€œWe became chopped liver,รข€™รข€™ Horschel said jokingly. รข€œWe went from 600 or 700 people watching us to about 50. We realized where we stand in this game of golf and we had a good joke about it.รข€™รข€™ It is, however, no joke. It is actually a sobering glimpse into the n

Mickelson, Woods battling to stay on top of golf games - USA TODAY

Phil Mickelson hits his approach shot on the first hole in the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open golf tournament. (Photo: Jake Roth USA TODAY Sports) SAN DIEGO รข€" In some golf circles the curtains are being drawn on the careers of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the titanic figures who have commanded the brightest spotlight on the PGA Tour's stage the past 20 years. A bit premature? Absolutely. We're talking about two of the best players of all time, after all, two players who work hard, are abundantly talented and to this day remain hungry for more conquests. But the past 13 months have provided some measure of reason for those who are confident Woods and Mickelson are in their final acts. Age offers another rationale to at least question the futures of the two best players of their generation, with Woods less than a year from turning 40 and Mickelson turning 45 in June. More basis for the hasty obits: Woods' body has been breaking down at an alarming rate s

Golf pioneer Charlie Sifford, 92, dies - ESPN

Updated: February 4, 2015, 1:11 PM ET ESPN.com news services Charlie Sifford, who only wanted a chance to play and who broke the color barrier in golf as the first black PGA Tour member, died Tuesday night, the PGA of America said. Sifford, who recently had suffered a stroke, was 92. Details of his death and funeral arrangements were not immediately available. "His love of golf, despite many barriers in his path, strengthened him as he became a beacon for diversity in our game," PGA of America president Derek Sprague said. "By his courage, Dr. Sifford inspired others to follow their dreams. Golf was fortunate to have had this exceptional American in our midst." A proud man who endured racial taunts and threats, Sifford set modest goals and achieved more than he had imagined. Sifford challenged the Caucasian-only clause, and the PGA rescinded it in 1961. He won the Greater Hartford Open in 1967 and the Los Angeles Open in 1969. H
