Last week tip returns: Sony Open- 2nd Chris Kirk 28/ 1, 4th Harris English 25/1

Webb Simpson 14/1

clinton 1Justifiable favourite even if his best in this slot is a T5 in the old five round Bob Hope format back in 2009. Webb has finished in the top four in his last four events; a solo fourth at the Tour C’ship was followed by that win at The Shriners, a T2 at the McGladrey and a T3 on his 2014 debut at The Tournament Of Champions. The stats say Simpson is miles ahead when you combine greens hit with strokes gained with the putter right now. Decent odds.

Charles Howell 33/1

Always going to be an each way bet until he breaks that seven year winless drought. T8 at the Sony Open but in reality it was over after round one for Charles; you just can’t shoot 71 and let the field get away like he did. However that’s four top 10’s in his last five starts and with his short game as sharp as it is, Howell will be relishing a return to the Humana where he only lost out after a playoff last year to Brian Gay.

Ryan Palmer 33/1

clinton 3One for the brave is Ryan, tipping him is like being in a batting cage with the power cranked up to max….you might connect, but you probably won’t! However I saw him hit enough greens in his T8 at Waialae to give him the nod this week. Tied sixth last year and had a solo fourth under the old format in 2011. I recall Palmer had good form here and in Phoenix this time last season so he’s worth a look.

Brian Stuard 45/1

Really impressed with Brian. Actually lead the Sony Open through Friday and finished solo sixth, backing up his second at The Mayakoba in November. Tied for 10th on his debut here and I’m really looking forward to seeing how he gets on given his excellent form.

James Hahn 150/1

clinton 2It might be a throwaway bet for some as James Hahn has no real form to speak of. However he shot a 63 and 62 (on Sunday) in this event last year and would surely have won by miles if he hadn’t fired that inexplicable third round 72 on one of the easiest courses in the PGA Tour’s roster. In the end he tied fourth. I’m also noting that Hahn seems to play a little better in the more informal atmosphere of Pro Am events; he also had a T3 at the Pebble Beach Pro Am in 2013.

Best of The Rest

Bill Haas didn’t make the shortlist but showed up on my radar at 28/1 because he’s a former winner of the Bob Hope in 2010 and tied second in 2011. On Thursday he’ll be aiming for his 28th consecutive sub par round in the event. Without being spectacular Haas has had top 30 finishes in his last five starts.

Pat Perez is another former winner who scored a nice top 10 at The Sony Open and stands at decent odds of 50/1.
