Callaway Hit Ball Out Of Park With Revolutionary New 2014 Big Bertha Drivers

With TaylorMade having had all the headlines lately the pressure was on Callaway to produce something new and innovative for 2014.  And they have.

Yes they were beaten to the punch by TM with the sliding weight on their 2014 Big Bertha but there’s still plenty of tech to get your teeth into and a Big Bertha Alpha driver with a never before seen CG altering gizmo.

The rehashed Big Bertha drivers will be available on Valentine’s Day 2014.

The new Big Bertha features a movable 8g sliding weight set into a track on the rear of the head which can be moved to any location.  Of course moving the slider influences shot shape bias and ball dispersion off the face.  Speaking of face, that is one of the deepest ever seen on a Cally and has been beefed up to max out ball speed on off centre strikes. Lofts can be adjusted four ways from 1 degree lower to 2 degrees higher in one degree increments and the lie can be set to 'D' for Draw and 'N' for Neutral.

The Big Bertha Alpha driver is particularly novel with its adjustable “Gravity Core.” This can easily be adjusted so that the sweet spot on the driver is positioned high on the face which will suit most golfers or extremely low, as in the SLDR, which top players prefer.  The low CG set up could reduce unwanted backspin by as much as 300 rpm.

The Big Bertha Alpha also has two other very TaylorMade-esque removable weights (1gram and 7 grams) at the extremities which can be adjusted to influence draw or fades.

With head weights under of 198 and 205 grams respectively, both the Big Bertha and Big Bertha Alpha drivers have forged composite crowns and come with the highly regarded Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki Z 50-gram shaft.

The Big Bertha (€300, $399) and Big Bertha Alpha (€370, $499) will be available at retail on Feb. 14.
