Zach Johnson 12/1

zach johnsonWhat type of character does it takes to win two weeks in a row on the PGA Tour? Someone like Zach Johnson, who takes it all in his stride. Zach added the TOC to his Tiger Challenge and BMW titles; that’s three wins in four months. Even better, Zach now has eight top-10’s in his last 11 starts. And if that’s not good enough, Johnson also won here in 2009, beating Adam Scott who also plays this week, and tied second in 2010. Simply awesome right now.

Jordan Spieth 16/1

o-JORDAN-SPIETH-facebookYou might wonder why Jordan Spieth is out at 16/1 this week after coming second at the Tournament Of Champions. The reason, in part at least, is the fact that in his last seven events Jordan has followed a top four finish, of which he has four, with a quiet week. However I’m betting that “one week on, one week off” theory will be bucked this week in only Spieth’s 25th regular season start. Super consistent in Kapalua and primed to win.

Charles Howell 20/1

howellThe regular PGA tourists get back in the mix this week at the Sony Open and none will be more keen to get going than Charlie Howell. Three top 10’s in his last four events of 2013 from The Shriners through to Mayakoba in November has the Augusta man psyched for a tilt at a tournament he’s historically done well in. Howell has clocked up four top five finishes here in the last five years including a T3 in 2012 and a T2 in 2012. His wait for a first win since the 2007 Nissan Open has been agonizing to watch; but he’s surely a great each way shout at 20/1.

Tim Clark 22/1

tim clarkRegular readers will know I’m a massive Tim Clark admirer. The South African may be small in stature but he targets courses and events to suit his game and this is certainly one. Solo second to winner Russell Henley last season, Clark also has a T2 in 2011 to Mark Wilson. I was impressed with the form Tim showed at the tail end of 2013 with a T2 at The McGladrey which included an awesome 62. One to watch.

Harris English 25/1

english2014 could be big year for Harris English who found the winning formula in 2013 with victories at the St Jude and OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Tied for 11th at the Tournament Of Champions last week, English comes back to the Sony Open for his second appearance having tied ninth on his debut last year. Hard to believe it’s only his 50th start this week; he’s on a cut run of seven events and has eyes on a Ryder Cup spot.

Best Of The Rest

2013 McGladrey winner Chris Kirk 28/1 got off to a quiet start last week at Kapalua with a T16 finish but it all serves as a good warm up for a tilt at the title this week. A second round 62 last year here helped Kirk to a T5 finish.
The longest odds shot I fancy this week is Brian Gay (50/1). Winner in January last year at The Humana, Gay has a tidy Sony Open record and was right in the mix in 2012 (T6) and 2009 (T5). Tied for 13th in Kapalua last week.
