Thomas Bjorn 10/1

thomas-bjorn[4]Five wins since February 2011 and the Dane is nailed on to be a vital cog in Europe’s Ryder Cup defence this year.  Deserved winner of the Nedbank in December for his trojan work throughout the season on the practice ground as anyone out there on Tour will tell you. If Bjorn can add his field topping GIR stats from last month to his third in putts per round from the 2013 Volvo Golf Champions he’ll be right in the mix.  At 42, the desire seems stronger than ever.

Jamie Donaldson 12/1

janmieWith home favourite Charl Schwartzel virtually unbackable at 3/1 the nearest I can find to value in the betting is Jamie Donaldson.  Five top 10’s in his last six tournaments of 2013 included a second in Turkey and a T2 at The Nedbank in December.  Tied for 16th last season thanks to a final round of 66, but has the measure of the Durban greens (T4 in putts per GIR). Bound to be rusty but still decent each way value.

Peter Uihlein 33/1

uihlein_thumb[2]How long we’ll have Peter on the European Tour is up for debate, but I feel this could be a great year for the young American.  Went off the boil for the big money events in Turkey and Dubai at the end of last season but returned with a T10 at the Nedbank in December.  Came out of the blocks well in 2013 and I expect the same this week.

Julien Quesne 40/1

quesneThe Frenchman put on a driving exhibition in Durban this time last year tying fifth.  Since then he has added four top 10s and a win at the Italian Open. Generous odds given his ridiculous stats on this course last season.
