Nelson Mandela’s Profound Effect On Both Tiger Woods and The 2003 International President’s Cup Team

Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders the World has ever known has died.  While there will be millions of tributes to the man and his works online, I’m paying a little tribute to Mandela and golf.

What is less well known is that Mandela made it his business to meet and engage Tiger Woods and local hero Ernie Els at the 2003 Presidents Cup held in George, South Africa.  Madiba’s presence at the opening ceremony was more than just a token appearance; he took a genuine interest in the matches.

As it turned out Mandela inspired Ernie Els and the International Team to one of their greatest ever President’s Cup performances, tying the match 17-17.   After three tied playoff holes between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els it was decided that the Cup would be shared by agreement of the captains and players. An agreement worthy of Mandela himself.

Captain of the International Team that day was Gary Player and he spoke with emotion about Madiba.

“We have made incredible strides in the great leadership we have from one of my heroes, Nelson Mandela, who came into power after being in jail for 27 years,” Player said. “He went to jail for doing the right thing, not the wrong thing, and that’s what makes it so impressive, to come out, have no revenge, no hatred, and love everybody.”

mandela woodsThe International Team have never won The President’s Cup since; in truth they haven’t even been close.  Many have speculated as to the survival of the matches before and since 2003.  Back then Tiger Woods was at his brilliant best and among talks of players schedules being too busy to play The President’s Cup, Tiger Woods secured the 2003 event’s success by announcing his commitment to play.

It was often said that Tiger Woods might say no to Captain Jack Nicklaus but would never dare say no to Nelson Mandela.

Their meeting had a profound effect on Tiger who was blown away by his “aura” and “presence.”

Rest In Peace Madiba.
