Hole Lost By Hacking Out Of Eight Inch Rough At Ryder Cup? Is This Matchplay?
Paul McGinley has done an amazing job in preparing the European side for the Ryder Cup but his instructions on the set up in Gleneagles could prove costly.
The Captain admitted to be being taken by surprise by the thick juicy rough that is eight inches tall in spots and will be especially punishing for the early morning starters on Friday and Saturday.
From an American perspective one player, Jim Furyk, said that finding the fairways off the tee could prove vital.
The worry from a European point of view is that with the home crowd cheering there could be a temptation for the players to be more aggressive with their shots, to go for the glory shot, to bite off a little more than they can chew, which could be seriously punished by the lush lettuce.
We certainly don't associate matchplay with hacking out, but there could be a lot of that at Gleneagles.
It is not really a matchplay setup, but here's trusting Paul McGinley has it that way for a reason.

"I'm a little surprised by the set-up. I didn't expect to see eight-inch rough in spots out there, and it is overly thick and overly long in spots.
"Being a guy that hits the ball relatively accurately when I'm playing well, it doesn't really drive me nuts or anything, but it has a different feel."
