Devil's Advocate: A Match By Match Scenario That Could See USA Come Back And Win The Ryder Cup
I have to say when I saw the draw for the final round singles it didn't send me jumping around the garden with joy. Yes Europe have a commanding 10-6 lead but here's a scenario, taken match by match, that could see this come down to the wire or even see the American's staging a Medinah like comeback.
Here's the draw.
Say Spieth and Reed, the 'men of the matches' so far continue their good form and defeat GMac and Stenson. That would be 10-8.
McIlroy and Fowler play out a high quality half. Score 10.5 to 8.5.
A rested Rose beats Hunter Mahan. Score 11.5 to 8.5.
Phil Mickelson jilted by Tom Watson on day two hits back by beating Stephen Gallacher. Score 11.5 to 9.5.
Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar now become key. If both men win, and they certainly could against Kaymer and Bjorn, the score becomes 11.5 to 11.5.
Straight hitting Jim Furyk takes out Sergio Garcia who doesn't have a good final day singles record. USA now lead 12.5 to 11.5.
Ian Poulter delivers his point against Webb Simpson. Level again at 12.5 each.
Keegan Bradley makes a point to Tom Watson that he was treated unfairly on day two by beating Jamie Donaldson. USA ahead again 13.5 to 12.5
That leaves Jimmy Walker versus Lee Westwood and Zach Johnson against Victor Dubuisson as key matches.
One win in either of those matches would see USA reach 14.5 points and win the Ryder Cup.
I'm not saying it will happen; I'm hoping it will not. But it's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility. This is by no means over yet.
