Favourites

Rory McIlroy 4/1 will start short odds favourite ahead of the links test this week.  Though no doubt fatigued after his exploits in Gleneagles, Rory still has the fitness and the links game to get the job done.  The Open (and US PGA) champion may have a sense of unfinished business at the Alfred Dunhill Links too; he has finished second twice, behind Mike Hoey in 2011 and Simon Dyson in 2009.

Victor Dubuisson looks to be decent odds at about 20/1.  The lightly raced Frenchman has played two Majors in his last four events including The Open where he was T9 and at Valhalla where he was T7.  Am reliably informed he will show up this week!  Finished T5 in 2012.

Doc’s Top Five To Watch

Tommy Fleetwood 30/1

Maybe it was a bit ironic that he won the 2013 Johnnie Walker at Gleneagles and this years Ryder Cup came a little early for Tommy but I’ve no doubt that he will be a future European Team member.  His three top fives in his last five starts came in the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Wales last time out where he tied second.  Fifth in this three course format in 2013 and T5 in 2011; watch out for Tommy Fleetwood this week.

Charl Schwartzel 25/1

Though mainly based in the US this year Charl is on a cut streak of seven since The Open with a recent best of T4 at the WGC Bridgestone.  Bowed out of The Playoffs at the BMW Championship where he finished T12.  Three top 15’s in the Dunhill Links since 2008 include a best of T7 in 2013.

Shane Lowry 30/1

Also on a fantastic cut streak of seven events dating back to the BMW International Open is Ireland’s Shane Lowry.  Not only that but Shane has notched up five top 15 finishes in those seven starts amassing an impressive 66 under par in the process.  Tied second in Wales behind Joost Luiten two weeks ago and returns to Scotland where he finished just one stroke behind winner David Howell in a tie for third this time last year.  On a world’s top 50 quest which would open up a whole new set of opportunities.

Simon Dyson 40/1

After missing the cut in the Czech Republic Dyson bounced back with a T7 in Italy and followed it with a solo second at the KLM Open.  Dyson won the event in 2009, came T5 in 2010 and T9 in 2011.  I think he will do well again this year.

Marc Warren 45/1

Since deservedly winning in Denmark Marc has been super solid on Tour with a T13 at the Omega European Masters and a T4 in Wales.  The home favourite will be looking forward at having a tilt this week.  Warren has a best finish here of T5 in 2011.

Long Odds Glory Shot

Bernd Wiesberger  at 60/1 just looks to me a threat every time he tees it up these days.  Sixth in Italy, T13 in Switzerland and T12 in Wales, the Austrian is close to a breakthrough. T12 in 2013.
