Video: Hunter Mahan And Jamie Donaldson Both Penalized For Playing Wrong Balls
This is just horrid luck mixed with a tad of carelessness for Hunter Mahan and Jamie Donaldson at the US Open.
Apparently on the 18th hole (their ninth of the day) both men played each others balls, not realizing the error until they were at the green. Both men play Pro V1x balls but neither noticed the distinguishing markings on either others balls.
Mahan and Donaldson had to return back down the fairway to the place the error was made, drop their correct balls and again play their approach shots under penalty of two strokes. For Dona ldson that amounted to a six, which added to the triple bogey on the 17th (his eighth) sent him crashing down the leaderboard.
Mahan also recorded a six and slipped to 4 over after the incident and subsequently missed the cut by one stroke.
It is unclear as yet who was at fault but caddie John Wood appeared to be on the receiving end of verbals from Mahan following the incident.
Update: John Wood accepted full responsibility. Wood thought Mahanâs tee shot kicked right and walked to the wrong ball. Both Hunter and Jamie play Titleists with a stroke through the number so it was immediately obvious to Wood that it wasn't the correct ball.
It was only when Donaldson went to mark his ball on the green that he discovered he also had played the wrong ball.
