Doc's Top 5 To Watch

Graeme McDowell 11/1

McDowell returns to Europe this week to defend the title he won in some style here last year.  A good early season has been followed by a very average year to date but that was improved greatly by a T6 at the Irish Open.  GMac knows too that tournament was there for the taking had he holed ANY putt in the final round.  The linksy feel of the Golf National outside Paris suits Graeme and if it plays as tough as in 2013 when nine under got the job done by four shots from Richard Sterne, I fancy McDowell to defend.

Thomas Bjorn 22/1

Again building momentum ahead of the Open Championship and I feel Bjorn will be featuring plenty in my tips over the next few weeks.  Impressive at Augusta (T8) and Wentworth (T3) Bjorn was also solid at the Nordea Masters (T15) and again last week in Germany (T8).  A 74 on Saturday here last season (with a double bogey on 16) derailed his chances and he finished T8, but if Thomas can stay patient this week he certainly can contend.

Richard Green 66/1

It has been a pretty decent few weeks for Richard who continued to play good golf with a T6 in Germany last week.  Came so close at The Open De Espana a few weeks back also and I’m sure Greeny will be relishing returning to Paris this week.  Has a best of T2 on the track 10 years ago when Jean-François Remésy won but has been in the mix several times since with a solo fourth in 2008, T6 in 2009, T11 in 2011 and T6 in 2013.  Great each way possibilities.

Jamie Donaldson 25/1

A chance for Jamie to re-establish himself with consecutive weeks in Europe after what has been a busy period in the USA.  Missed the cut at the US Open (including that wrong ball incident with Hunter Mahan)  but played really well at Augusta after his T2 at the WGC Cadillac.  Tied fifth last week in Germany and was T6 here last year.

Simon Dyson 45/1

Looks to have put all that “cheating” business behind him with a few very good weeks including two T5 finishes at Wentorth and again last week in Germany with a Sunday 66. Confidence will be high as he returns to Paris where he finished solo fifth last year.

Top Home Player

Although Gregory Havret got into the playoff in Cologne last week, I’m plumping for Romain Wattel at 35/1 to be the top home player this week.  I recall him holing some acreage of putts in the first round last year (I think he shot 67) and with five successive top 30 finishes in his last five starts, I fancy Romain will do well this week.  Fun to watch and a good character.

Long Odds Glory

Gary Stal 80/1 looks a very good French prospect and after a T8 in Ireland will be looking for a good finish.  Paul Waring 125/1 was just outside the top 10 in Germany last week and has played well in Paris before. Robert Rock is out at 175/1.  You show them this week Rocky!
