The Last Five US Open Winning Driver Makes And Models. You Will Be Surprised!
Through my work with Golfbidder I have a become a huge believer that just because a golf club is not the latest model doesn't mean it cannot do as good if not better a job. Lee Westwood for instance will game a Ping G10 driver this week at Pinehurst, a club that was released seven years ago in 2007.
So I thought it would be cool to look at the drivers that won the last five US Opens, check whether they were current or older models at the time and what they retail for now. I think you will be surprised by the results.
2009 Lucas Glover: Nike SQ Sumo2 Tour
2010 Graeme McDowell: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3
GMac had done particularly well with the FT-3 since 2007 and stuck it back in his bag (he had been gaming the FT-Tour if memory serves) for his trip to Pebble Beach in the Summer of 2010. While Spain were playing tipi-tapi football at the World Cup, GMac played tipi tapi off the tee in Pebble, bisecting the fairways. Still a hugely popular driver with its Fusion Technology the FT-3 is regarded by many as one of Callaway's best ever. From £42 on Golfbidder
2011 Rory McIlroy: Titleist 910D2
There was something quite awesome about Rory McIlory in his super cool Oakley gear and his Titleist clubs in 2011; I wished he had stuck with them longer. The Titleist philosophy of "if it 'aint broke don't fix" when it comes to bringing out new drivers saw Rory use the 910D2 as if were an extension of his arm to overpower congressional. If Obama was the hero of Washington in May of 2011 for taking out Osama Bin Laden, Rory was the hero in June. The Titleist 910D2 is available from £114 on Golfbidder.
2012 Webb Simpspon: Titleist 909D3
Another example of a Major winner using a favourite club was when Webb Simpson used the Titleist 909D3, then released four years, to win at Olympic Club. Speaking of Olympics, they were held in London that Summer. And who can forget the Bird Man fellow, who made Webb Simpson's speech the most viewed ever. Before Mike Davis tackled the guy. The Titleist 909D3 is available from £69 on Golfbidder.
2013 Justin Rose: TaylorMade R1
With all the drivers that TaylorMade release each year, top marks if you remembered Justin Rose using the R1 at Merion. It's the one with the compass looking dial at the bottom and a whole truck load of adjustability that came after the R11 and before we all started SLDR-ing. The R1 is available from £135 on Golfbidder.
So there you have it; three of the last five US Open winners used drivers that were not the current model at the time. It just goes to prove, what's newest is not always best!

2009 Lucas Glover: Nike SQ Sumo2 Tour
When Lucas won in Bethpage the world was coming to terms with the death of Michael Jackson and square headed drivers. Functionally they hit the ball super straight, but aesthetically they couldn't hold their place in the market. Still Nike got another Major Championship winning driver, and this time one not used by Tiger Woods. Can now be got on Golfbidder for a very reasonable £49.
