2016 Olympic Golf May Be Moved To Existing Itanhang Golf Club Near Rio

I told you this would happen. Specifically that all that the faffing around trying to get Gil Hanse’s Olympic Golf Course in Rio built would come back to bite them in the arse.
The project is so far behind now that even a blind man can see the utter embarrassment ahead for all concerned.

itiAfter listening to months of bullshit words that everything was hunky dory from all concerned, finally the cracks are appearing and some of the head honchos are breaking ranks.
The dogs in the street know there is a MAJOR land dispute and as anyone who has seen the film Elite Squad: The Enemy Within will know, disputes in Brazil are rarely resolved quickly or peacefully for that matter.
Even this "test" event, a dress rehearsal for the Olympics, now looks highly unlikely.

Peter Dawson visited Rio recently and finally called a spade a spade saying
"€œWe are not satisfied. I was down there just recently and, while the design of the course looks really good, the progress with the construction is not where we want it to be.
There have been meetings held last week in Rio to revise the plan, increase manpower and facilities which is designed to bring the project back on track.
There have been so many revisions to the plan it's quite hard to say how far behind they are but I think we are going to struggle to get a test event a year before the Games. I'm not writing that off completely but we have to recognise that might be difficult."
So here'€™s my next prediction.
In the coming months, a contingency plan will be hatched should the Olympic course not be ready.  It will involve preparing the Itanhangá Golf Club, nestled in the tropical vegetation and hills between the Pedra da Gávea, the Pedra do Itanhangá, and the Tijuca National Park.

The course had originally bid to host the golf tournament of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio but corporate greed and politics put paid to using it deciding instead to build from scratch.

The official reason given at the time was that the IOC would have wanted significant remodeling of the golf course, and did not want to inconvenience the country club with prolonged closure. This of course has been rejected outright by club staff.

So there you have it, let us see if I am right for a second time.  I hope I'€™m not.
