2014 Valero Texas Open Betting Preview Tips and Predictions
The Course
This will be the fifth year that the Oaks course in TPC San Antonio has staged the event. Traditionally a very stiff par 72 test was made a little easier when the course was given a facelift before the 2013 staging. That was evidenced by Martin Laird shooting a Sunday 63 to edge out Rory McIlroy, who doesnât play this year. This event has been moved around the schedule so much it has to have affected its popularity. From being part of the Fall series, it was then held after The Players Championship. Last year Texas was the final tournament before the Masters, this year it swaps slots with Houston. Phil Mickelson is the marquee name competing as he tried to find form before The Masters.

Jim Furyk 25/1
Played this tournament last year for the first time in 19 years and scored a T3 with some fine course management. That came after a poor week at Bay Hill, a tournament which Jim decided not to play in this season. That says to me he fancies a tilt in San Antonio this week as part of his Masters run in. Let me down last time I tipped him at Innisbrook with a T20, but I figure heâll do much better this week. Traditionally a strong performer before The Masters. Still super GIR stats but needs an improvement in his 5-10 foot putting stats this week.
Matt Every 25/1
Little point saying it now but I always fancied Matt Every for this week, but he surprised me by coming good a week early at Bay Hill. Set a then course record 63 at TPC San Antonio on his way to a T2 in 2012 famously using the unwieldy Black Hawk putter that had an MOI of 12,000! Great recent form with a T6 at Riviera and a T8 at Innisbrook en route to his win at Bay Hill last week.

Charley Hoffman 30/1
Absolutely LOVES it in Texas. Whether this event was played as part of The Fall Series, after or before the Masters, at La Cantera or here at TPC San Antonio, Charley has always been a contender. To my best recollection, since 2008 Charley has never been outside the top 15. Tied second behind Brendan Steele here in 2011and scored another T3 last year when Martin Laird won. Rested after a week off The Hoff has top 10âs at the Humana and Farmers, a T12 at the Northern Trust and a T25 last time out at the Valspar in Innisbrook. Just outside the top 20 in Total Driving and GIR in the stats.
Billy Horschel 50/1
Fourth visit to TPC San Antonio for Billy. Lead for much of the event in 2013 and finished T3. The Valero Texas Open has switched places with the Shell Houston Open from last season and it was this week in Houston last season that Billy kick started his season with a T2. Best this season of a T6 at the Tournament Of Champions but no top 20 since. I thought he played better at Bay Hill last week however and even though he finished with a 75 will bring some confidence into the week. Fourth in total driving belies his recent results.
Brendan Steele 50/1
Won this event in his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2011 and tied fourth when defending the following year. I like the way Steele plays; yes he misses the odd cut but more often than not heâs in the top half of the leaderboard, cashing in most weeks. Best this season of T6 in Phoenix and T10 at Riviera and a T20 last week at Bay Hill. Finished T43 last season but he wasnât on form then; he is now. Big accurate hitter from the tee, a great each way chance.
Best Of The Rest
Fredrik Jacobson 40/1
Returning to form with three consecutive top 20âs including a T10 at Bay Hill last week, even with a final round of 73. Has played well in Texas in the past. Best of second to Adam Scott in 2010 when the event had its post Players Championship slot and tied fifth in 2011. T18 in 2012 and T15 last year.
