Why A Genetic Condition Means Tim Clark Physically Cant Use A Normal Length Putter
Tim Clark has changed many players minds when it comes to the long putter rule change and anchoring ban. During a players meeting recently at Torrey Pines Clark spoke passionately to fellow professionals, laying bare his condition that physically stops him from turning his forearms and wrists inward. He has used a long putter not to treat the yips, but for this reason.
Clark wasnât even playing the Farmers Insurance Open that week, but travelled to Torrey Pines to get the opportunity to stand up in the crowd and say his piece in front of the USGAâs Mike Davis.
âTim Clark canât even grip the club the right way,â said Robert Garrigus who empathized with Clark following the meeting.
âGuys understand whatâs going on out here, and thereâs a little bit of compassion, and a little bit of understanding from the players who are dealing with this every week,â Jason Dufner said on the subject. âWeâre playing against each other. We know how hard it is out here. There are some guys who have been doing this a long time and feel like their livelihood would be taken away with an anchor ban. You might see really prominent guys not be able to stay out here, or you might see litigation. You donât want to see players in that position, where they feel like they have to defend themselves.â
Iâm on Timâs side in this. Even if the ban does come into effect, maybe there should be some sort of dispensation for players with legitimate medical conditions like Tim.
The USGA and R&Aâs 90-day comment period ends today. The USGA will decide later this spring whether to implement the ban.
