2014 Maybank Malaysian Open Betting Tips and Expert Picks

Kiradech Aphibarnrat 25/1

Well we couldn’t come to Malaysia without tipping our old friend Alfie the Barn Rat; he’s made us so much corn in the past!  Not the kind of frame you might think would do well in the hot and sticky conditions of Kuala Lumpur but Kiradech retains water well and is generally in the mix here.  The reigning Asian order of merit holder is now spending his time knocking around the middle to lower order of the PGA Tour but remains a different proposition in Malaysia.  Tied third at the CIMB Classic behind Ryan Moore when the PGA Tour came to town last year and won the 2013 Maybank Malaysian Open.  For the life of me I can’t think why he’s out at 25/1; I would have him at fives!

Gregory Bourdy 40/1

There’s an ATM on the side of the European Tour truck just for Greg.  I can’t remember him missing a cut since the Hassan in 2013 and that was 22 events ago for him; he hasn’t been over par in a tournament since the Open at Muirfield, 14 tournaments ago!  Improving form with top 30’s in his last four starts and coming back to Kuala Lumpur where he finished second to Manny in 2011.  Just outside the top 10 in 2013 when the event was reduced to 54 holes.

Matteo Manassero 20/1

Another man trying his luck now for the most part on the PGA Tour.  Coming off missed cuts in Houston and Augusta, this place should be more up the Italian’s street as he won here in 2011 and tied 7th defending in 2012.  There has been good stuff too from Manny on the PGA Tour, he was just outside the top 10 at the Honda and tied 8th at Innisbrook.

Rafa Cabrera Bello 22/1

Rafa brings form to Malaysia with three top fives in his last six starts including last time out at the Trophee Hassan.  He also has course form with a T4 in 2011 and T3 in 2012.  T22 last year but was struggling with his game at the time. Not so this year.

Edoardo Molinari 40/1

I think Edoardo is going to have a much improved year as we get into the meat of the 2014 season.  Impressed already with top-10’s in Dubai and at the Tshwane and played good golf Sunday in Morocco last time out to score a T25.  Solo second here last year in the weather shortened event.

Long Odds Glory

Gavin Green 200/1

I first heard about Gavin in the US Kids Golf scene when he won just weeks after severely severing his nose in a freak accident at home. He has developed into a top player since and could well be the future of Malaysian golf.  Gavin ranks inside the top 25 in the amateur rankings and has an excellent youth and collegiate record at the University of New Mexico.  Tied 22nd here last year, he’s a little more experienced and could do better this week. 15/2 to finish in the top 20. And would you believe he has a younger brother Galvin!
