Tiger Woods continues to roll at Firestone
It seems you've read, and I've written, this story before. Tiger Woods, with a big lead, cruising to a victory at Firestone Country Club even with an entire round left to play.
Saturday was just the third round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, but with a seven-shot lead on a golf course that they might rename Tiger's World when his career is over, the engraver had probably already pressed his name into the trophy and took the weekend off.
Woods posted a third round 68, good enough to maintain a seven-shot lead with 18 holes to play.
They say one of the hardest things for a pro to do is follow up a ridiculously low round with another great round, but on this golf course he didn't need to go that low to maintain his enormous lead over the rest of the field.
Sunday will be a light stroll for the No. 1 golfer in the world. Sure, he will say after the third round that this tournament "isn't over yet" and there "is still one round to go" but anyone that has seen or watched Tiger in his career knows that this will be the golf equivalent of the final day of the Tour de France, a round of golf that is all but conceded to the man with the Swoosh on his cap.
Tiger had some loose swings on Saturday. He hit some errant iron shots and drives that missed right, but the guy is just on a different level right now in terms of scrambling. His birdie on No. 13 was great, but just look at how he closed out his round on No. 18, punching a shot out of the rough to the front of the green and then pitching the ball to a couple of feet to save par.
The story now is simply how much will Tiger win by. Sunday will mark eight times that Woods has left Firestone with the hardware and it will be his 18th World Golf Championships win (only one player, Geoff Ogilvy, even has three WGC wins).
If nothing else, this week has shown us that when Tiger Woods is clicking, he is still as dominant over the rest of the golfing world as he was when he was picking up major wins by the handful.
