2013 Tour Championship Betting Preview, Tips and Predictions
*Pending field confirmation, odds will be included when available.
September 19-22, 2013, East Lake GC, Atlanta,GA, Field: Top 30 FedExCup Pts. Standings, Purse: $8,000,000, Winning Share: $1,440,000
1. Jim Furyk
Jim looks irresistible at the moment; my only worry is mental fatigue after his exploits BMW Championship last week. He had signalled a big end to the season with four consecutive top 10âs from the RBC Canadian Open to The Barclays so his performance in Illinois was not wholly unexpected. Furyk has a great East Lake record too having only once been outside the top 10 since 2008, including a win in 2010. Judging by the way he holed that putt for his 59 Jim has got that steel back; Freddie Couples must be kicking himself.
2. Zach Johnson
Since tying second at the inaugural Playoffs Tour Championship in 2007, Zach Johnson hasnât really been at the business end of the tournament since but I canât recall his form ever being this good at the end of a season before. Since tying second at the John Deere, Zach had a great Open (T6), tied fourth at the WGC Bridgestone, top 10âd at the USPGA, tied fifth at the Wyndham and played great last week. Heâs also the course record holder having shot 60 here in very soft conditions in 2007. Has to be in with a great chance of a W this week.
3. Hunter Mahan
Could Hunter be peaking for the Tour Championship? Improving results from The Barclays (T25), the Deutsche Bank (T13) and a good performance at the BMW Championship suggest he might be. Mahan has the driving accuracy and putting game ideally suited to this tough Donald Ross par 70. He was also the man standing opposite Bill Haas when he chipped in to win in 2011. Maybe this place owes him one!
4. Brandt Snedeker
Brandt is the defending champion this week having won by three shots in 2012. His form is hard to nail down however as he constantly battled with injury niggles. After winning in Canada, Sneds missed cuts at The Wyndham and Barclays and never threatened at the Deutsche Bank. However he looked back to his old self again last week in Chicago and remains one to watch this week.
5.Ryan Moore
At time of writing Ryan Moore hasnât secured his place at The Tour Championship, but I tipped him to do well at the BMW and he didnât let me down tying sixth after three rounds. Moore may only have had three top 10âs before the BMW but he hasnât missed a cut since The Travelers and tied third at East Lake last year. I like him too on tougher tracks; the winning score here is rarely double digits under par. In a tightly packed field of 30, he represents decent longer odds value. If he makes the field!
