George Coetzee 14/1

Great to see a fully fit George back in a starring role on the European Tour.  The Pretorian notched up an impressive fourth in Abu Dhabi then backed it up with another T5 in Qatar a couple of weeks back.  He also has four top 15 finishes in the last five stagings of this event with a best of T3 last year to Sterne.  Second favourite to Charl Schwartzel who is 4/1.

Richard Sterne 22/1

On form maybe Richard doesn’t warrant featuring on the tips but he is a two winner of this Championship and thus deserves respect.  Missed the cut in Qatar and mixed goods rounds of 66 and 69 with a bad 73 and a downright ugly 76 in Dubai last week. In fact I make it that Richard hasn’t scored a top 10 on the European Tour since August last year.  On the flip side, four of his Tour wins have come in the first 8 weeks of the season.  They include here in 2008 and 2013.  Will being home make the difference?

Dawie Van Der Walt 65/1

sponsor wantedAnother home player who I think has a great chance this week is Dawie Van Der Walt.  He won the rain shortened Nelson Mandela tournament in December and started the season with a T9 in Qatar and a T29 last week in Dubai even with a Sunday 73.  Dawie came close here in 2012 (T3) when Branden Grace won and also top 10’d in 2011 and 2008. Great each way odds.

Danny Willett 30/1

I like Danny Willett in South Africa and I think Danny Willett likes playing in South Africa!  The Englishman made a cameo on the leaderboard last week in Dubai on his way to a T13 and brings good form to a continent that has been very good to him over the years.  Danny had a T9 at the Alfred Dunhill in Leopard Creek back in November, is a past winner of the Africa Open (2012), and came a close second at the 2013 Volvo Golf Champions in Durban.  He has also had success here at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington with two T4 finishes in 2009 and 2010.

Hennie Otto 45/1

Still very much able to mix it with the best.  Almost won the South African Open (T2) at Glendower on his last visit to Johannesburg and is on an incredible cut streak of nine events on the European Tour.  Even better than that, Hennie has been under par in each of those nine tournaments with three top 10’s and a worst finish of 37th which came last week.  Two top 10’s since 2007 at the Joburg Open include a third in 2007 and T6 in 2010.

Best Of The Rest

Darren Fichardt  50/1 is unlucky not to make it into my top five and maybe his lack of form historically at this event contributed to that.  However when you consider his T10 in Abu Dhabi, then a T16 in Qatar and a T13 in Dubai and that he’s 28 under for his last three starts, Fichardt is well worth consideration this week.
Robert Rock 40/1  is another supremely talented player, who when the stars align, is capable of great things.  He is traditionally a strong season starter with six career top 10’s coming in the first five weeks of the season.  Fifth in Dubai last week and a recent best of T9 here in 2012.
