Video: Asian Discrimination? Seung Yul Noh Unwittingly Penalized For Hitting Off Green, This Wouldn't Happen Rory Or Tiger.

I know from the grapevine that Seung-Yul Noh isn't everybody's cup of tea but what happened yesterday struck me as being downright unfair.

Noh's tee shot on the 11th tee landed on the third green. As I understood it a player is allowed play from any green should he so wish or take a free drop from the nearest point of relief.  Problem is Noh thought the same and hit from the putting surface.

He was THEN approached by a referee and told he was being assessed a two shot penalty.

The Rules of Golf actually say you may not play off the WRONG putting green, but instead are entitled to take a free drop.

 Rule 25-3 says

"If a player's ball lies on a wrong putting green, he has to take relief and must drop within one club length not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must also not be in a hazard or on a putting green."

My problem with all this is that the rules official was seated 20 yards away and watched all this play out without saying a word. It must have been obvious to the ref from practice swings etc that Noh did not know it was a penalty to hit off the third green yet didn't step in?  Surely this would not have happen a McIlroy or Woods?  I remember another time when Peter Kostis stepped in to help a player who was about to be penalized. Last week David Feherty helped Jason Day find his ball.  But Noh clearly means no.

Instead of a bogey, Noh signed for a 7 on the hole.  Seemed tough on the lad.
