Tiger Woods Bows Out Of 2014 Ryder Cup. House Of Cards Fall Over
This stinks of politics so bad, but at least it has played itself out to a logical conclusion; Tiger Woods has taken himself out of consideration for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
I posted earlier in the week about the ridiculous situation Tom Watson was in, having to somehow keep Tiger sweet with promises he had zero intention of keeping, and the disrespect Tiger's ongoing determination to get a pick was showing to all the fit players who have played well this season and are more deserving. Team USA can now get on with some real team building.

I've been told by my doctors and trainer that my back muscles need to be rehabilitated and healed. They've advised me not to play or practice now. I was fortunate that my recent back injury was not related to my surgery and was muscular only.He plans to play again on December 1st? Not even sure if that is a good idea.
I have already spoken to Tom [Watson] about the Ryder Cup, and while I greatly appreciate his thinking about me for a possible captain's pick, I took myself out of consideration. The U.S. team and the Ryder Cup mean too much to me not to be able to give it my best. I'll be cheering for the U.S. team. I think we have an outstanding squad going into the matches.
I plan to return to competition at my World Challenge tournament at Isleworth in Orlando, Florida, Dec. 1-7. It's an event that's important to me and my foundation, and it will be exciting to be playing again.

Tiger Woods has informed the PGA of America and United States Captain Tom Watson that due to his current health situation, he has taken himself out of consideration to serve as a Captainâs Pick for the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Team.
âWhile I greatly appreciate Tom thinking about me for a possible Captainâs Pick, I must take myself out of consideration,â Woods said. âIâve been told by my doctors and trainer that my back muscles need to be rehabilitated and healed. Theyâve advised me not to play or practice now. Iâm extremely disappointed that I wonât be ready for the competition. The U.S. Team and the Ryder Cup mean too much to me not to be able to give it my best. Iâll be cheering for the U.S. Team. I think we have an outstanding squad going into the matches.â
âMy primary wish is for Tiger to be healthy and competitive, and I hope that heâll return to the game very soon,â said Watson. âOf course, Iâm disappointed that Tiger Woods has asked not to be considered for the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, and that his health is not where he would like it to be. However, I think we can all agree that we need Tiger Woods in this great sport, and he has taken the high road by informing me early on in the selection process. My focus will remain on identifying three players to join the U.S. team and give us the best chance for success at Gleneagles.â
Woods has appeared on seven U.S. Ryder Cup Teams between 1997 and 2012. He did not compete in 2008, due to injury.
âBy making this decision, Tiger has put the U.S. Ryder Cup Team and his health first,â said PGA President Ted Bishop. âAnd although weâre disappointed that he will not be part of this yearâs Team, we respect Tigerâs decision, and wish him all the best for a speedy and successful recovery. This is a classy and respectful move by Tiger that allows Captain Watson plenty of time to formulate his team plans accordingly.â
