Eisenhower Finally Gets Wish As Ikeâs Tree Felled After Augusta Ice Storm
Sad to hear of the demise of Ikeâs Tree, golfâs most famous pine tree from the 17th hole at Augusta National.
The Eisenhower Tree suffered extensive limb damage in an ice storm and had to be removed at the weekend. The tree stood 200 yards down the left of 17 for over 100 years. Eisenhower hit into the tree many times and in 1956 suggested it be better cut down at a club meeting.
âThe loss of the Eisenhower Tree is difficult news to accept,â Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne said. âWe obtained opinions from the best arborists available and, unfortunately, were advised that no recovery was possible. We have begun deliberations of the best way to address the future of the 17th hole and to pay tribute to this iconic symbol of our history â" rest assured, we will do both appropriately.â
On a brighter note, Payne also said Augusta was open for play today to members.
