PGA Tour To Take Over The European Tour To Gain China and Ryder Cup Profits
Itâs all the broadsheet newspapers today; The PGA Tour are making an âaudacious bidâ to take over the European Tour. According to journalists, the motivation behind the move for the PGA could be to gain a foothold in China and a slice of the profits from the cash rich Ryder Cup which they are currently missing out on.
The European Tour now finds itself in a tough position as it struggles to find sponsors and to stage tournaments with any real value. The loss of McIlroy, Westwood, Garcia et al has ravaged the field strength in European Tour events and the end of season cash bonanza in Dubai is now threatened by an impending financial crisis there.
Taking over the European Tour is not a far fetched proposition for the PGA Tour; they are already set up a South American version of the PGA Tour called PGA Tour Latinoamerica and successfully taken control of the Canadian Tour.
So whatâs in it for the PGA Tour? Obviously taking the scalp that is the European Tour is appealing to the PGA Tour but the business reasons are solid. Taking over the European Tour gives the PGA Tour a direct line to China and the Asian Market with ready made events and venues; this is something the PGA Tour crave. The Chinese market is also desperate to attract the worldâs best players to their shores more regularly.
The aforementioned Ryder Cup pot is another reason; at present it is the PGA Of America and not the PGA Tour who divide the profits of the event with the European Tour.
The papers are reporting that as yet talks are being described as informal but the European Tour needs a bailout and fast.
