1. Scramblers From Rough Will Thrive
Keegan Bradley showed how tough the greenside rough will be as he swiped his 60 wedge completely under the ball during practice. "Look at this. The ball is 6 inches off the ground,"You're going to see a lot of whiffs this week. Guys are going to go straight under the ball."
2. Phil Mickelson Says Itâs All About Hitting Fairways and Course Management on Approach Shots
"I'm sure they're going to cut some of it, but it was extremely thick, and so therefore the key to that course is going to be two things," Mickelson said "One is the fairway; you've got to hit fairways. You can leave yourself further back, but you've got to hit fairways. And two is Donald Ross courses, the greens tend to be a little bit more severe back to front, and I think you're going to have to leave it underneath the hole. Chipping from behind the greens it's almost impossible to get it close."
In another interview he reiterates
âThat to me is one of the biggest challenges that Oak Hill provides, because if you do miss it long, getting that chip shot to stop close, especially out of difficult rough where it's hard to control the ball chipping, that's the big challenge. It forces you to want to leave every shot underneath the hole so you can get up and down.â
3. Short Hitters Need Not Worry
Unlike Merion's anti-roll 1/2 inch fairways, Oak Hillâs fairways are like carpet, allowing the ball to run out.
4. Fairways Will Be Cut Half and Half
Tiger Woods explains. âIt's playing quick. These fairways, especially on the left side, they obviously cut it downgrain on the left side so you can get a lot of chase to it. Some of the holes, you run out of room quick. It's playing, even though it's a little bit longer than what it was in '03, it might be playing a little bit shorter because it is drier. The balls are really running out there.â
5. Drivers Will Not Be Needed Much
After practice, Tiger Woods said he will be hitting between 2-5 drivers depending on how much things firm up.
