2013 Deutsche Bank Betting Preview, Tips and Predictions

August 30 - September 2, 2013, TPC Boston, Field: Top 100 FedExCup Pts. Standings, Purse: $8,000,000, Winning Share: $1,440,000
Last week’s tips. PGA Tour: Woods T2, Furyk T6 European Tour: Gallacher T2, Wiesberger T4, Rumford T6

Rory McIlroy 20/1

Twitter controversy aside, if there’s one golf course that suits Rory’s game down to the ground it’s TPC Boston. His form of late is much improved too with a T8 at the US PGA backed up with a T19 at The Barclays. With a big Irish following in the town I expect Rory to produce his best of the season this week. Defending champion.

Brandt Snedeker 36/1

Sned has been off his game since winning in Canada a month ago and he has missed his last two cuts at The Wyndham and The Barclays. TPC Boston is a whole other proposition however at just over 7200 yards and a par of 71 favouring the better putters. That has been borne out in Brandt’s recent performances here; sixth in 2012, tied third in 2011 and tied fifth in 2010. Good odds on a proven horse for the course.

Steve Stricker 40/1

Steve sat out The Barclays which is kind of a double edged sword. On the one hand it says he’s a man at peace with himself and his game that  can just choose to sit out a big money event. It also means he’s rested. On the other hand, it says he may not be up to match speed. I believe Stricker will do just fine in Boston; he won here in 2009 and although he has only played three events since the US Open in June he has finished inside the top 15 in all.

Jim Furyk 40/1

With Webb Simpson still infuriatingly struggling to put four good rounds together, I’m sticking with Jim Furyk at decent odds of 40/1 after he narrowly missed out on the podium with a tied sixth in New York. Tied 13th last year and top 10’d in three of the previous four years before that, if the putts drop for Jim he’ll be right up there again.

Jonas Blixt 140/1

I’m going to have a nibble at Jonas Blixt this week primarily because of his 140/1 odds. The all orange final day Puma stunt already reported on GCD, I believe, was a big part of the reason he shot 81 on Sunday at The Barclays. The Swede tied for 20th in his first appearance at The Deutsche Bank last season and though eliminated from the playoffs then, came back in October with a strong showing at The Shriners before winning the Frys.com Open. I certainly wouldn’t be quoting those odds on a guy with proven late season form, who won the Greenbrier in July and came solo fourth at the US PGA in August. Just sayin!

Favourites Watch:

Tiger Woods 7/1 collapsed with back pain after hitting a drive during the final round of The Barclays last week but the fact that the Deutsche Bank doesn’t start until the Friday of Labor Day weekend will give the world number one an extra day to recover. Even with the injured back, he still managed to tie second at Liberty National which looks ominous for the field. As with most courses Tiger posted a win at TPC Boston in 2006, tied second behind Phil Mickleson the following year and posted a solo third last year.
Phil Mickelson 16/1 is like a magician reappearing at the back of the hall to huge applause. After winning The Open, Lefty has admitted to lacking in concentration but he bounced back delighting his New York fans and sponsors with a tied sixth last week. If memory serves he experimented with a belly putter this time last year and still managed to tie fourth. Like Woods, Mickelson is also a past winner here in 2007.
