The Ultimate Titleist Driver Test. 913 Versus Its Predecessors

Watch out for my Golfbidder video in the coming weeks but for now here’s a sneak preview of some of the driver testing we carried out on the simulator/launch monitor over the past couple of days.

shopI thought it would be interesting to address the largest cross section of golfers and pit Titleist’s “more forgiving” set of drivers against each other.

The proving ground, an abandoned airforce base in Chessington!

I was really keen to see how the 913D2 sacked up against its predecessors, the 910 D2, 909 D2, 907 D1 and even the 905 R.

We grabbed the five drivers, all 9.5 degree loft and with stock stiff shafts and took a sample of 10 drives.  We got rid of the nuclear ones and the shorters one to leave a representative sample of five average drives, all delivered with much the same clubhead speed from which to base the results.  And here they are.

On test the 913 D2 was impressive.  Look at that launch angle of 13.1 degrees and an average clip of 287 yards!  Yes you have to take launch monitor results with a pinch of salt, but when all the drivers were tested consecutively under the same conditions, there little doubt that Titleist have sprinkled a bit of fairy dust on the 913 D2.

On test the 913 D2 tonks it 7 yards past its the 910 D2, and 13 yards past the 907 D1.  The incremental gains speak volumes for the advances in technology which, all marketing blurb aside, have delivered results.  We also found on test that, as a family, nothing hits it straighter than a Titleist, the dispersion results were tight.

But what about the 905 R, an absolute gem in its day and still fondly remembered by all who owned her?  True, she had a sweet spot as difficult to find as a G-spot, but by God, when centred it went miles.  An average clip of 290 yards, with spin rates comparable to the 913 D2.

Clap on the back Titleist, a test well worth doing and passed with flying colours.
