Tom Watson Had Told Other Players Bill Haas Was His Captain's Pick
Having a look around the sites this morning I see a piece from Alex Micelli (on that dreadfully annoying golfweek site where an ad always pops up which you have to X) stating that Bill Haas had been Tom Watson's Captain's Pick before Webb Simpson begged so hard via text message that he got chosen instead.
But Watson remained unconvinced. Haas had compiled a 3-5-2 record against the Internationals in the biennial Presidents Cup matches, so Watson turned to a fellow Stanford alumnus, Tiger Woods, for insight regarding Haas and Simpson. It cannot get any more messed up. Or can it?
It's unclear how Woods might have advised Waston, but on Monday night after the Deutsche Bank Championship, Watson called at least some of his team members who were flying from Boston to Denver with the news that Bradley, Mahan and Haas were the picks.
Tuesday morning at Cherry Hills, where the BMW Championship was to be contested, word of Watson's selections had leaked out and the news was being discussed among the caddies and players on the range.
As word began to spread in Denver, Watson was home in suburban Kansas City, listening to an impassioned phone plea from Simpson.
The plea and Simpsonâs 2-1 record with Bubba Watson in the 2012 matches at Medinah proved persuasive. Ultimately, Simpson would compile a 0-1-1 record at Gleneagles.
