Under The Shirt: The Muscle And Biomechanics That Make Rory McIlroy's Swing The Best
The ladies are going to love this. And the men will be in awe.
It's a shirtless Rory McIlroy hitting balls in the fantastic Biomechanics Lab at the Univeristy of Ulster Jordanstown in Belfast earlier today. The lab is one of the reasons UUJ are now firmly established as one of the most successful golfing universities in Europe.

It's fascinating to see just how much power is created from Rory's unique sequencing. And now the added muscle mass has brought it on yet another notch.
The Science Bit
These five systems were running concurrently to analyze Rory's swing in the lab today:
1. Two Casio Exilim EX-F1 high speed cameras.
2. Thirteen Qualysis cameras running throughout.
3. Trackman running throughout.
4. GBD, which is specifically designed for Golf Professionals who wish to focus on BioFeedback Training. Two six degree of freedom sensors can be used in multiple locations. However today Rory had 22 sensors on his upper body, 18 below the belt. The sensors send a 3D image back to monitor, where software 'connects the dots on screen to produce data. Force plate analysis, which is his weight transfer through the swing was also being used.
5. And finally, impact Guru, which gives impact on clubhead down to 0.001 of a millimeter.
If you are the best to want keep improving by tiny amounts, it takes all this data to do it.
Thanks to @uugolfclub for the pics, reigning strokeplay and matchplay intervarsity champions.
