The Good | The Bad | The Ugly |
Bill Haas Following in the footsteps of Dad Jay, Bill took advantage of the benign early conditions to post his four under. Will be subject to much tougher examination tomorrow in the afternoon winds. Meanwhile his Dadâs mate Freddie continued his excellent Masters record. The one thing that troubles the seniors is the length of the modern Augusta. Heck it troubles half the field. What a fantastic sight it was then to see Couples yet again get off to a flyer. | Dustin Johnson Walking out of the tournament last week in Houston after a poor round was poor form by Dustin and though Butch Harman claimed to have fixed him in the meantime, Dustin hit a couple of the fattest wedges youâve ever seen today. Needs a low round tomorrow just to make the weekend. | Past Champions Angel Cabrera and Zach Johnson with two very contrasting styles find themselves in need of a miracle to make the weekend from six over. |
Adam Scott I said earlier in the week that were Adam Scott to become one of the very few players to defend the Masters title (Jack, Tiger, Sir Nickers), he would be knocking on the door of legendary status. And what a serene start he made, seemingly cruising throughout. Could put some distance between himself and the field if this continues tomorrow. | Treatment Table I can never recall in my lifetime so many marquee players being injured at the same time. Itâs hard to trade your pyjamas for slacks and tees and come to Augusta as Jason Day (and to a lesser extent Justin Rose) found out today. Two of the short odds favourites coming are hanging on by a thread. | Phil Mickelson Took a triple bogey 7 on the 7th hole from a seemingly innocuous location on the fringe. It was lefties worst ever score on the hole. But to his eternal credit he battled on gamely holing a bomb on 10. Phil never takes the easy road, it was ugly but entertaining. |
Louis Oosthuizen If the golfing Gods do justice, Louis will get his green jacket. Looked absolutely super on the course day, driving it huge and with a nifty pre shot putting routine that worked really well. | Par 3 Winner Ryan Moore might have thought for a long period today he was going to be first player to win the par-3 contest and The Masters. He boarded the 14 tee level par and walked off the 18 five over and a broken man. | Jason Dufner Probably wishes the ground would open up and swallow him whole. His 8 over round included a quadruple bogey on 13. Just lay up! |
