Shotlink Stats Show Driving Distance Not A Factor In Masters Leaderboard

I quoted Gary Player's unhappiness at Bubba Watson gunning a 366 yard drive over the trees on 13 at Augusta but as it turns out, according to the stats driving distance had very little impact on the seven players who finished the tournament under par.

The shotlink stats (or their equivalent as used by the Green Jacketed ones) for the week show that all but one of the seven highest finishers ranked in the top 20 in the Greens In Regulation stats, proving that not having to chip the ball around the greens at Augusta really helps.

Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth were both in the top five in GIR.

The second and third most influential stats were Driving Accuracy followed Birdie Average, again with five of the seven highest on the leaderboard ranked in the top 20.

Four of the top seven ranked in the top 20 in the Putting stats.

Only two of the top seven featured in the top 20 of the Driving Distance statistics, Watson being one.

So what can we conclude? Yes Bubba Watson's win was in part due to his long driving which made it easier to hit the greens in regulation, but more to do with his incredible accuracy both off the tee.  A long drive, off line, can land you in a whole heap of trouble.

It's almost exactlty as I predicted in my pre tournament tips video.  Have a watch.
