2013 Valero Texas Open Free Golf Betting Preview and Tips

The Course

Many of the courses on the PGA Tour have been on the rosters for decades but the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is only a baby in Tour terms. Not that it’s easy. Oh no.

A 7,435-yard test designed by Greg Norman with special guest Sergio Garcia, the course combines Australian style greens and surrounds with Spanish style tightness tee to green. Driving accuracy and greens in regulation are key to winning here.

Since its inception on Tour TPC San Antonio consistently ranks as one of the toughest par 72s on the PGA TOUR schedule. Adam Scott got it to 14 under in 2010 but double digits under par have not been seen since. The par fives help in keeping the scoring down; they simply don’t yield birdies.

The greens in TPC San Antonio are also statistically the toughest on shotlink. Little wonder that flat stick ace Ben Curtis won here in 2012. Add into the mix, at times incredibly strong winds and you have quite the pre Masters test.  Several measures have been taken to make the course more playable such as widening some fairways, lowering the rough, changing the run offs in the green complexes etc, but it’s still no walk in the park.

Winner Alright:  Last week we tipped Henrik Stenson 50/1 and David Horsey 33/1 both of whom paid out each way.

Charley Hoffman 33/1

charleyStreakier than a rasher! Poor old Charlie hasn’t been on top form for a while.  Since the end of January to be precise, when he top tenned at the Humana Challenge.  However that all changed last week in Humble where a field topping greens in regulation performance saw him get it to nine under for the week and into the top 20.  Tied for second in 2011 and hasn’t been worse than 13th since the tournament moved to the Oaks Course.

Freddie Jacobson 25/1

freddie jacobson funny pic[5]A course where good putters thrive, this has been a good tournament for Freddie Jacobson since the move to the Oaks Course in 2010. The Yak came closest in 2010 but just failed with birdie attempts on the last two holes to force a playoff with Adam Scott. Tied for fifth the following year and then 18th in 2012, a poor Friday costing on both occasions. Jacobson is rested after a week off and brings in a good formline of top 25 finishes in his last four strokeplay events.

Cameron Tringale 33/1

triangleClosing in on 100 PGA Tour starts and Cameron Tringale is still looking for his first win. The former Georgia Tech star has two top 10’s in San Antonio, with a tied fifth in 2011 and tied eighth last year. Played great in Tampa where he finished third and put up a good showing again last week in Houston. Well worth an each way bet.

Brendan Steele 50/1

Steele_3-150x150Brendan Steele played brilliantly to win here in 2011 and battled to tie for fourth last year. The California native has struggled to break par over the last few weeks since a good sixth in Phoenix, but seems to have the formula to unlock this Oaks course which can be impossibly tough at times with gusts up to 30 mph regularly sweeping through the course.

Henrik Stenson 25/1

HENRIK-STENSONLet’s stick with Henrik after he made up a wheelbarrow load of money last week at Redstone with a tied second from 50/1. His newfound accuracy off the tee and greens in regulation stats top the PGA Tour player stats making the Swede dangerous on every course he plays. Making his debut on The Oaks course.
