Hereâs the overall number crunch for the week at the 17th in Sawgrass, courtesy of the PGA Tour.
SUNDAY The 17th hole's impact on the final day of THE PLAYERS can't be understated. Jeff Maggert and Sergio Garcia stepped up to the tee as contenders and left with a combined total of 12 strokes on the par 3. Each lost his chance to win THE PLAYERS on that very hole. David Lingmerth hit his tee shot to 7 feet but missed the putt that would have sent him to No. 18 tied for the lead while Tiger Woods was able to two putt for parfrom nearly 45 feet to maintain his advantage. The 17th on Sunday played to a stroke average of 3.247 -- its stingiest number of the week -- claimed 13 golf balls to bring the week-long total to 44.
SATURDAY Just six players found the water on No. 17 during the third round. The 17th played to a stroke average of 3.026 on moving day, making it the course's 10th toughest hole on Saturday. Former PLAYERS champ Justin Leonard was the first to find the hazard in Round 3 and the only one who found the water after losing a ball on the hole in Round 2. | FRIDAY Just nine players found the water in Round 2 (and none hit in the wet stuff twice) to bring the week's water ball count to a total of 24. The hole played better than a tenth of a shot easier with 123 of 142 carding birdies or pars on the signature hole at TPC Sawgrass. Just three of Friday's victims played in the moring wave while the other six lost balls came in the afternoon groups. At 2.972, the 17th was the 10th-toughest hole at TPC Sawgrass in Round 2. | | THURSDAY A dozen players found the water off the tee in Round 1 but nearly twice as many (22) carded birdies on the devilish little par 3. Three of the 12 who played from the drop area added a second ball to the day's count, which totaled 15 shots in the water overall. The morning wave saw 60 percent (9) of the 15 water balls meet their fates. At a 3.076 stroke average, the 17th ranked ninth-toughest at TPC Sawgrass in the first round of THE PLAYERS | |
