Rory McIlroy Leaving Horizon To Set Up Own Management Company
Rory McIlroy is leaving his management company Horizon Sports to set up his own management company with his Dad Gerry and a few friends. Itâs less than two years since Rory left Chubby at ISM to join Conor Ridgeâs Irish sports management company Horizon.
So why move and why do it in the middle of the season? Has Tiger Woods been in Roryâs ear convincing him the greenbacks are greener on the other side with one manager like Mark Steinberg? Or has Carolineâs entourage from IMG lured him? Or has one of current aides suggested he does most of the work anyway so why not leave together?
McIlroy didnât comment on the matter yesterday, but did tweet a picture of his and Carolineâs movie night, with his socks on the wrong feet, which looked like he wasnât losing any sleep over it. Personally Iâm leaning towards the Tiger option maybe combined with one of his current aides. But thatâs just my opinion. One player, one focussed managed team, no stable, no dilution of management. Itâs a model popular amongst some of the worldâs top sports stars.
Itâs hard to see if blame can be attributed to Horizon in any way for the move. Yes the move to Nike looks to have been an ill advised decision (at this point) but boss Conor Ridge has always pointed out, Rory makes his own decisions. Also Horizon moved heaven and earth with their structure to accommodate McIlroy when he arrived and it certainly doesnât seem like he has been ignored in any way.
But every cloud has a silver lining and McIlroyâs departure, though not good news right now, may be good for Horizon in the long term. They will have less costs, will have gained experience of managing the worldâs best and be able to refocus the attention on their existing stable of players.
But will the greenbacks be greener on the other side for Rory? And are Titleist waiting on the other side with arms outstretched?
