2013 The Players Championship Betting Preview Power Rankings and Tips
Itâs the tournament dubbed the âFifth Majorâ this week at a TPC Sawgrass which has been battered by heavy rainfall over the past week. With conditions still expected to be very wet underfoot throughout the tournament, hereâs who we think will contend this week.
Matt Kuchar 40/1
Kuch has not finished outside the top 35 in any of his five starts since winning the WGC Accenture Matchplay in Arizona back in February. But he hasnât set the world alight either with just one top 10 coming at The Masters. However Kuchar is the defending champion at Sawgrass and with two other top 15 finishes in the past four years cannot be ignored.
Sergio Garcia 40/1
Sergio is always a good bet to feature at The Players. Granted he finished with a 79 in 2012 to drop down to 56th but he has made 11 cuts in 13 Sawgrass starts and won a hat full of money in that time. A win in 2008, and second in 2007 are his best results here and with 12 top 20 finishes in his last 14 strokeplay starts. Ranks 10th in strokes gained putting and third in scoring on the PGA Tour this season.
Kyle Stanley 130/1
Kyle Stanley is finally bursting in form just at the right time. Last years Phoenix Open winner starts his 84th Tour event this week and brings form including a solo third in The Zurich Classic and a tied sixth last week at Quail Hollow into this tournament. A prodigiously long hitter off the tee and ranking ninth in approaches to the green from over 200 yards, if Sawgrass plays very wet and long, which looks likely, it may play into Stanleyâs hands.
Bo Van Pelt 75/1
Six foot four and full of muscles, BVP had a great 2012 with a win in Perth and 11 other top 10âs besides. This year has been different with missed cuts and mid table mediocrity peppering some otherwise decent form. However a tied sixth finish after an opening 74 at Quail Hollow is a sign that things are on the up for Bo who tied seventh in 2012 and fourth in 2010.
Luke Donald 22/1
Two top four finishes in Innisbrook and Hilton Head are a sign that things are on the up for the former world number one. Lukeâs scrambling stats have plummeted this year to date and itâs those he relies on to notch up the wins. I still think he will have a good week here after a solo sixth finish in 2012 and tied fourth in 2011.
Lucas Glover 120/1
Rounds of 73 and 75 at the weekend at Quail Hollow dropped the former US Open champion down to tied 27th but with a T4 finish the previous week at TPC Louisiana, I feel Glover might just have one more week in him. Finished in third, just two shots off Tim Clark in 2010.
Best Of The Rest
If you are looking for some long odds glory at Sawgrass try Martin Laird at very generous odds of 150/1 on betfair after missing cuts at the Masters and the Wells Fargo last week. However itâs only a month since the Scot won the Valero Texas Open and he has form after tying second last year.
The question for Lee Westwood at 38/1 is can he putt well enough to win at Sawgrass? In his 10 starts here, he has a recent best at the venue of tied fourth in 2010 and has two other top 10âs besides. He also comes into the week with three consecutive top 10âs at Houston, Augusta and Quail Hollow.
