Volvo Sponsorship Withdrawal Not As Bad As First Feared. Commits To China Open For 5 Years

When I heard Volvo was pulling its sponsorship on the European Tour last week it sounded dire.  However the reality isn't as bad as first feared.

The name, the "Volvo World Matchplay Championship" rolls off the tongue with ease but after this weeks 16 man event at the London Club, Volvo will end its association with the event.

Truth is the world matchplay (offering pretty crappy money) has been struggling to attract a really decent field for a while now and while Patrick Reed's presence along GMac and Ian Poulter adds spice to this weeks staging, the world's best are staying away.  Back in the day Nicklaus. Palmer, Seve and co were winners of the event.

The news isn't all however.  Volvo will continue its sponsorship of the China Open for the five years at least.
