Brian Gay 33/1
Hard to believe that when Brian Gay won the Humana Classic back in January he was set to have one of his crappiest seasons on Tour, but thatâs exactly what happened. Gay didnât manage even one top 20 finish in the 2013 season after winning but has started the wraparound 2014 campaign well with a T4 at the McGladrey Classic last week. That performance included an opening round 63 and if Gay brings his game to this course where he won in 2008 (back then staged in February and tied fifth in 2011, he has to be a good each way shot.
Briny Baird 50/1
You could say Briny handed Chris Kirk victory at the McGladrey last week in an embarrassing manner, but I feel differently and empathize with him. Baird was faced with an awkward downhill lie in the bunker on 18; he simply had to take the shot on. Okay he slipped and topped into a hazard but at least he had the balls to try and handled himself with dignity after. I give Baird a great shot this week on the El Camaleon course; he hasnât been outside the top 15 since 2008 and had three consecutive top six finishes from 2009 to 2011. Will the golfing Gods serve justice?
Matt Every 28/1
Despite some late mistakes I saw enough at the McGladrey last week to fancy Matt Every for a good performance in Mexico. Enjoyed watching him contend at Colonial (T4) this year and Liberty National in the playoffs (T9).Tied for third in the 2012 event, just two behind winner John Huh.
Chris Stroud 33/1
I wonder if Chris can see his family home in Texas from the course across the Gulf Of Mexico? Yes he missed the cut on 5 over at the McGladrey but tied for third two weeks previous at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia. Stroud has been in the top five in the last two stagings of the Mayakoba with a T5 in 2012 and solo fourth in 2011.
Greg Chalmers 66/1
Just a month after his 40th birthday Greg Chalmers tees it up on the PGA Tour instead of playing the meat of the Australian season. Tied 15th at The Shriners in late October, his best result for ages and improved again with a T10 at the McGladrey. I remember Greg winning the Aussie Open and PGA around this time in 2011 and for me heâs well worth a couple of quid each way.
