Campaigners Call For End To "Ice Bucket Challenge" After French Golfer Cut Free From Bucket By Emergency Services

Social media sites have this evening rejected calls to ban pages and videos linked to the craze “The Ice Bucket Challenge” â€" despite an incident today which saw French golfer Romain Wattel having to be cut free from a stainless steel bucket after getting into difficulty whilst attempting to perform the stunt.

‘The Ice Bucket Challenge’ is a controversial online game which sees golfers post videos of them drenching themselves in ice-water tipped from an over head bucket and then nominating someone else to do the same within 24 hours.

Golfers such as Ian Poulter, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis have already posted videos of them performing the deadly feat.

Campaigners against the craze site hypothermia, drowning, women's t-shirts becoming see through, and getting the bucket stuck on your head as potentially serious risks involved in the stunt.

During today's incident, one eyewitness said he saw Wattel in great distress  for up 10 minutes with the bucket on his head, as "he ran around the place clanging off things" while those around laughed and cheered.

Another report claimed a caddie on Tour added a pint of WD40 lubricating oil to his ice water as part of the reckless game and then challenged others to do the same.

This evening European Tour Chief George O'Grady issued a statement on the matter

“If men have any decency and respect they will refrain from anymore of this stupid Ice Bucket Challenge," said O'Grady. "But it's absolutely fine for women in t-shirts."

More as it emerges.
