Rory McIlroy apparently broke up with Caroline Wozniacki in a very, very brief phone call

Details have started to emerge following the sudden split between Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki, and they probably aren't going to get Rory nominated for Boyfriend of the Month.

Some reporters at the French Open weren't exactly convinced about how the split went down between the two athletes, and did some digging. What they found out was that the breakup wasn't as much a team decision as it was a short phone call by the golfer.

The worst part? Wozniacki apparently thought Rory was kidding when he said he wanted to split. Ouch.

Here is what Neil Harman of The Times had to say about the called off engagement between Wozniacki and McIlroy.

"The last time (Rory) called, less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke.”

And Christopher Clarey of the New York Times got wind of something similar, and sent out this tweet concerning the relationship situation.

Now, all of this is a bit different than the beautiful picture that Rory painted about the split.

While Rory initially said in a statement, "the problem is mine," he later said in a press conference preceding his BMW PGA Championship win that, ""It was mutual and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I've said all that I need to say."

There are few avenues you can go down on this one, but my first point is, we don't totally know exactly how it went down unless one of you had a bug on one of their cell phones. Rory said his side of they story, Caroline has hers, and if he really did do it on a short phone call, that isn't exactly the most noble way of breaking up.

That said, these two people are professional athletes who travel all the time. I think a lot of stuff is probably handled over the phone or via text messages since it isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world to have a sit-down dinner when Rory is in Dubai and Caroline is in Palm Springs.

While they both were in Europe the last couple of weeks, both these people are athletes that have a process for getting things done and need to stick by that. Rory was attempting to win the biggest non-major on the European Tour while Wozniacki was both battling injury while trying to prepare for the French Open. If Rory did call her for three minutes and dump her, that's pretty bad, but I'm sure more will come from this after these allegations have emerged.

Wozniacki, of course, was bounced from the first round of the French Open, noting a little rust in her game considering all that she has gone through over the last couple of weeks.
