Everything You Ever Needed To Know About George O'Grady
Who is this suave sophisticated man who runs the European Tour? I've been researching George O'Grady and was pretty impressed by what I've found.
O'Grady was born on the British protectorate of Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1954, the only son of a high ranking British Colonial Officer. And a nun.
The young George spent his formative years being privately schooled in the card game "Bridge". By the age of 8, he had written three books on defence strategy in Contract Bridge and amassed a fortune penning a syndicated newspaper bridge column for the Tanzania Times.
O'Grady grew bored with cards by the age of 15 and moved to England to become a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He studied alongside Ben Kingsley and Patrick Stewart and indeed the trio made a brief cameo in Coronation street in 1969 as "rascals stealing underwear".
O'Grady's big break came in 1979 when he was spotted by legendary TV producer Glen A Larson following a film cameo as a "beheaded knight" in John Boorman's Excalibur.
Larson signed O'Grady on a $40 million contract, a fee unheard of at the time, to play Captain William Anthony "Buck" Rogers, a NASA pilot who is accidentally frozen for 504 years before his spacecraft is discovered drifting in space in the year 2491. O'Grady played Buck Rogers in 37 episodes foiling several evil plots to destroy the future planet earth.
O'Grady married his on-screen friend and semi-romantic interest, Colonel Wilma Deering played by Erin Gray in the first ever all expenses paid wedding for HELLO magazine.
O'Grady joined the European Tour in 1990 initially to act in a promotional video, but so impressed bosses that they offered him the job as chairman after only three days. He has remained in the role ever since.
