2013 Northern Trust Open Betting Preview and Tips
Odds on bâfair at time of writing
Aaron Baddeley 48/1
Stone the flaminâ crows! Iâm going with the Jesus freak for one more week! A good Sunday 67 at Pebble climbed him into a tie for 12th, rescuing the logic of the tip somewhat. Badds won here in 2011 and tied for 11th in defending his title last year. He was right in the mix until a bad final round. Riviera is tailor made for Baddeley, in 10 career starts here, heâs never even come close to missing a cut.
Jimmy Walker 38/1
Thanks for all the messages telling me how much money you won on Jimmy Walker at the AT&T last week for his tied third finish. I was very sorry to hear Mark Roeâs comments about how Jimmy played the last hole with three irons, but perhaps he wasnât aware of his past struggles; Walker had been in a similar position in 2012 and 2011 but cracked. I personally thought his par at the last this time around was course management at itâs best and bagged him a cheque for $338,000. In the past two years Walker has gone on to tie fourth here at Riviera. If there is some adrenalin left in the tank, he should figure again.
JB Holmes 100/1
The bookies donât fancy JB to do well because heâs not carrying a good formline but I think heâs a different beast here. Iâll tell you why. Big hitting and the ability to cash in on the par 5âs have served him and me well in the past. In the last five years J.B., without ever really threatening, has never been outside the top 12 here. Thatâs a few quid over $1 million in prize money by my calculations. So now do you think heâll have this one earmarked?
A great bet to finish in the top 10 at around the 10/1 mark if you get him early. No doubt the bookies will slash his odds after reading this.
Keegan Bradley 34/1
Itâs hard to believe this is only start number 61 on the PGA and European Tour combined for Keegan. Who can forget the epic final hole then playoff with Phil Mickelson and eventual winner Billy Haas last year? After missing the cut at The Farmers and a 24th in Phoenix, Bradley took a week off last week, no doubt to spend it with his coach and Riviera head pro Jim McClean. Heâll come into this week fresh and prepared and will know the course conditions and set up better than any.
Sergio Garcia 23/1
Seven under par won here last year which shows just how difficult it can be to score around this magnificent venue. Garcia tied for fourth in 2012 on his return to the event after a three year absence. In all this will be his eighth start in the event, finishing inside the top 25 on five occasions. An MC at Pebble and indications on the course that heâs not entirely happy with his form will put many off, but a recent best of second in Qatar and on this shot making track, I still think he can do well.
Best Of The Rest
Freddie Jacobson 110/1: Tied for seventh at Pebble Beach last week with a final round of 67. I always like Freddie on tougher courses like Riviera. Tied for 13th in 2012.
KJ Choi 48/1also usually emerges from hibernation around this time of year. Heâs a Friday nighter. If heâs in the mix on Friday night, get on board. If KJ starts strong, he finishes strong.
Apology: Sorry for tipping Dustin Johnson last week. Of course he wasnât going to be able to play worth a damn with his prospective father in law staring at him throughout. Now that Mr Gretsky has skated back to the hall of fame, DJ can get on with his golf. He has a really great game for Riviera and two top four finishes in the last three years. If you think the MC last week was down to Paulina, get on board the Johnson train this week at 23/1.
