EA rebrands golf game 'Rory McIlroy PGA Tour' - Golf Channel (press release) (blog)

Rory McIlroy has largely supplanted Tiger Woods as the face of Nike Golf, and now he's taking over Woods' video game series.

EA Sports announced Monday that its relaunched golf series will be called "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour."

Woods had served as the game's face since 1998, but he and Electronic Arts in 2013 made a "mutual decision to end [their] partnership."

McIlroy has been a playable character in the last two versions of the game and appeared on its European cover alongside Woods and Seve Ballesteros in "Tiger Woods PGA Tour '14."

"Playing video games is one of the ways I try to relax in my downtime, and one of my favorite video games was golf," McIlroy said in a statement published on the game's website. "That’s what makes today’s announcement so exciting to me. I am on the cover of EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR and it’s named after me. That is crazy! I am more excited than I can possibly put into words."

EA also revealed Monday that Golf Channel's own Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo will provide the game's commentary track.

After publishing 16 straight editions of the game from 1998-2013, EA did not release a PGA Tour title in 2014, waiting two years between installments to craft a new version for next-generation (XBOX One and Playstation 4) consoles.

The game was originally due out this month but will now be available in June. The newest trailer, announcing McIlroy as the cover athlete, appears below:
