How golf helped Stephen Gostkowski make that game-winning kick for the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots remained undefeated with a last-second win over the New York Giants on Sunday thanks to a pair of golfers. Quarterback Tom Brady recently compared his throwing motion that has him as the front-runner to win NFL MVP to his golf swing, and it seems that kicker Stephen Gostkowski channeled the lessons he's learned on the course to help him make that 54-yard field goal that moved the Pats to 9-0 on the season.

This past Thursday, Gostkowski, who was last listed with an 8.3 handicap index, was on SiriusXM PGA Tour radio talking about the similarities between playing the two sports. Take a listen:

Here are a couple of the money quotes:

"There’s a lot of similarities," Gostkowski said. "You can leave the club face open and spray it to the right, you can have your foot close off too much, hit off the wrong part of the club or your foot, and the ball can go any which way."

"In golf and in field goal kicking, most of the times I screw up is when I try to hit the ball too hard."

We assume Gostkowski had that last lesson in mind when he converted his the long, clutch kick on Sunday.

How about the players on the defending NFL and NBA champs (Golden State Warriors) being so open about their golf and how it helps them in their primary sports? Pro teams might be wise to start requiring golf to be part of off-season workouts.
