College senior Jon Rahm has to pass up on another big PGA Tour paycheck, then try to pass exam
As a golfer with amateur status, Jon Rahm isn't allowed to make any money when he plays in PGA Tour events. But that hasn't stopped the Arizona State star from making the most of his opportunities.
Playing on a sponsor exmemption, Rahm rallied after two consecutive double bogeys to start his final round at the OHL Classic to shoot five under the rest of the way. The closing 70 put him T-10 for the week in Mayakoba, and earned this message from Sun Devils head coach Tim Mickelson:
We hope Rahm passed that test -- especially since he had to pass up on a check for $137,433. That's a lot of beer money for a college senior.
In fact, this is the second time in less than a year that the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking has excelled on the world's top tour. At last year's Waste Management Open, Rahm, aka "Rahmbo," became just the second amateur to finish in the top five in a PGA Tour event since 1998. That performance would have earned Rahm $239,400 had he been a pro.
Good luck on that test, Jon, but we think you'll have a pretty steady job whenever you graduate.
