Former U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang finds he’s not yet ready for professional golf, returns to college

Former U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang left San Diego State (without turning pro) to play professional events around the world, but after doing so has decided to return to college golf, Tod Leonard of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. “[H]is Korean parents don’t speak English, and his San Diego-based instructor, Glen Daugherty, doesn’t speak Korean, but they used almost the exact same words to advise him. ‘Your education is important. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself. Give your golf game time to mature.’”

Boo Weekley blasted the PGA Tour’s wraparound schedule, and though he might have a point, it’s the tour’s job to create lucrative playing opportunities. “It’s in the Tour’s DNA, all the way down to the circuit’s mission statement filed with the Internal Revenue Service,” Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel writes. “‘The [Tour’s] principal mission is to promote the sport of professional golf through sanctioning and administering golf tournaments,’ the statement begins. It’s a job those who walk the halls of the Tour’s Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., headquarters have gotten very good at; this season’s schedule features 47 events, from October’s season-opening Frys.com Open to the Tour Championship next September.”

Dustin Johnson will host a junior golf tournament in Myrtle Beach early next year, aimed in part at bringing Chinese juniors there. “His coach at Coastal Carolina, Allen Terrell, has been coming to Shanghai for six years to teach at Sheshan International and to educate families on how their children can get golf scholarships in America,” Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press writes.
