Top Golf complex planned near St. Johns Town Center - Florida Times-Union

Plans are underway to build a Top Golf entertainment complex near the St. Johns Town Center. An ordinance was filed last week with Jacksonville City Council to rezone about 15 acres along Interstate 295 east of the Town Center to allow for the project.

Top Golf complexes feature a high-tech driving range with targets that range from 25 yards to more than 200 yards. Each golf ball has a microchip in it that’s read by the targets, allowing various measurements of distance and accuracy.

Computer screens keep track of each player’s score.

The price for use of each bay is $25-$45 per hour, depending on the time of day, for up to six players. Each of the 100 bays is climate controlled and has food and beverage service.

There are restaurants, bars and private party space in each complex.

Last week, Top Golf officials told the Times-Union that while the company was interested in Jacksonville, no location had been confirmed. It has not yet returned the T-U’s Wednesday calls and emails.

Top Golf’s website lists 13 locations around the country with another 12 coming. Jacksonville is not on that list.

Its only Florida location opened last December in Tampa. A Top Golf spokesman told the Tampa Tribune that each location typically hires 350-400 people.

The site plan for Jacksonville calls for a 64,232-square-foot building and 425 parking spaces.

The land is part of a 46-acre parcel owned by several trusts belong to the Skinner family. Chip Skinner said the 15 acres are under contract but that a confidentiality agreement prevents him from saying anything more.

A public hearing will be held at the City Council meeting on June 23, followed by Land Use & Zoning Committee hearing on July 11.
