2014 Wales Open Betting Preview Tips And Long Odds Shots
Doc's Top 5 To Watch
Joost Luiten 14/1
Willibrordus Adrianus Maria aka "Joost" has had a poor Summer by his high standards having largely faded away since a third in Austria back in June. That all changed with a T4 in Italy and the Dutchman again put up a good showing with a T5 in his home KLM Open last week. Finished in a bunch tie for second here in 2012 when Thongchai won by a shot and was T4 last year when Greg Bourdy took the title. Will probably start up there with the favourites in a field including Ryder Cuppers Bjorn, Donaldson, Westwood and Gallacher.
Simon Dyson 25/1
Bounced back from a missed cut in the Czech Republic with a T7 in Italy and then finished second last week in Holland; a tournament he has won three times in his career. Simonâs putting seems better (heâs been in the top 30 in the putting stats in his last two events) and though he only has a recent best of T6 in Wales from 2009 I think heâll do better this week.Romain Wattel 33/1
Crack open the Champagne for Romain as he celebrates his 100th European Tour start this week. The big hitting Frenchman has two top 15âs in the last three years in Wales and has put together a nice run of form coming in. Followed a T11 in Italy with a T9 in Switzerland and a T5 last week in Holland. On 34 under cumulatively for those three events, I expect a big Bleus finish this week.
Peter Uihlein 40/1
You could argue that Peter Uihlein was having a much better season last year when he finished second at Celtic Manor but he had actually missed three cuts in a row coming to Wales (at the Reno Tahoe, in Oak Hill and Gleneagles) and that finish was a bit out of the blue. Recently Peter has been solid if unspectacular with a T19 at the Czech Masters, T36 in the European Masters and T22 at the KLM Open. Benefits the most from the more âAmericanâ style layout of the TwentyTen Course at Celtic Manor and with it playing that little bit firmer this year, Peter could do well again.
Pablo Larrazabal 50/1
Hard to pin down the Spaniard but he made his first start since Valhalla at the Omega European Masters following an extended break. Granted Pablo missed the cut there but he did go on to record a T5 in Holland and Iâm betting heâs itching to go again this week. Has a best of T4 when Alex Noren won in 2011.
Long Odds Glory
Robert Rock 125/1 is improving in form and like Paul Casey last week, has the ability to win from nowhere. T15 last year and has a best of T4 in 2010.
Graeme Storm 100/1 missed the cut last week but after coming second in Switzerland will be keen to score big again here. T6 last year and well worth an each way punt since there's no pressure to keep his card.
