2013 Irish Open Betting Preview, Predictions and Tips

Thomas Bjorn 16/1

thomas-bjorn[4]Tommy Bjorn checked into Carton House at 8.30am Monday morning and spent the day practicing.  He’s serious about this.  Bjorn is on a very good run of form of late and battled it out with Ernie Els down the stretch at the BMW International Open in Germany last week. Funnily enough the Dane’s best club this season, his driver, let him down slightly on Sunday but with much more room at Carton that won’t be a problem this week. That solo second makes it three consecutive top five finishes and when coupled to the fact that Bjorn won the last time the Monty course staged the Irish Open in 2006, he’s an irresistible bet.

Ross Fisher 25/1

rossI’ve been pretty regular in my tipping of Ross Fisher of late and I’m going to stick with him this week. The 2010 Irish Open winner tied 18th in Germany six shots behind winner Els and averaged some impressive stats along the way. Fisher tied third in driving accuracy in Germany and that coupled with his length will put him in all the right positions around the Monty course. He putted well too last week and I fancy he’ll do well. Tied fifth here in 2006.

Padraig Harrington 18/1

podgePadraig jets in from TPC River Highlands where he produced a strong showing for 54 holes last week on the PGA Tour. I really enjoyed watching Podge tie for seventh last year in Portrush; he seems to save his best golf for his national championship. The bunkers and green surrounds are incredibly tough on the Monty Course at Carton House and Padraig is one of the few who has the short game to negotiate them. If he can eradicate that one destructive round out of four, I for one have faith that Padraig can produce a great showing this week.

Shane Lowry 22/1

Shane Lowry funny friday[4]_thumb[1]Finished in style with a 65 last Sunday and Shane will be looking forward to coming home for the Irish Open. It’s on his patch, he lives on the estate now, is Carton House’s touring pro, and spent a lot of time at the GUI National Academy, so if anyone knows the course, it’s the Offaly man. His win in Baltray was the stuff of legend but Shane has shown he’s no flash in the pan with a second win in Portugal last year.

Darren Fichardt 100/1

fichardtMight not be the biggest star on show this week but take it from me Darren Fichardt has game. Won the Africa Open in mid February and nearly repeated the feat two weeks later at the Tshwane Open where he took second. Another second at the Zimbabwe Open have Darren topping the Sunshine Tour Order Of Merit. Missed cuts in Wentworth and Sweden but re-emerged with a putting exhibition on his way to a tied seventh last week in Germany. A June winner too last year in France, don’t say I didn’t tip him!

Best Of The Rest

Paul Waring 55/1 played great last year in Portrush tying for 10th and I’ve been keeping an eye on his progress ever since. The Englishman is playing on a medical exemption this year having missed all of 2011 and a chunk of last season with injury. Best results this season include a tied fourth at the Open de Espana, a tied fifth in Austria and a tied 10th last week in Germany. Just past the 100 tournament milestone on the European Tour, don’t be surprised to see him up there.

Brett Rumford 60/1 is a former Irish Open champion and he looked like a world beater winning the Ballantines and China Open in May. Took a month off and returned in Germany last week posting the second best putting stats. Okay Brett drives it crooked, but that’s not a big deal here; he could do well.
