Louis Oosthuizen's WD inadvertently spoils Harris English's FedEx Cup chances

The PGA Tour will be the first to admit that, although it's FedEx Cup postseason is in its ninth year of existence, its point format could still use some tweaking.

If any doubt surrounded this notion, Thursday's action at East Lake Golf Club illustrated a new shortcoming.

In its current configuration, each of the 30 players at the season finale have a chance to win the $10 million postseason prize. Granted, only the top five golfers in the FedEx Cup standings entering the Tour Championship can control their own destiny, but, with a little providence, even the lowest-ranked individual in the event -- in this year's case, Harris English -- can emerge as the playoff champion.

So imagine English's surprise when, after finishing his first round at Atlanta, he found out he was eliminated from the FedEx Cup running.

For English to leave Georgia with the $10 million, he would have needed the following to happen:

  • Win the Tour Championship
  • No. 1 in the FedEx Cup ranking (Jason Day) to finish 29th or 30th
  • No. 2 (Jordan Spieth) to finish...

Actually, let's stop right there. Because the Day stipulation is now an implausibility.

Mentioned above, 30 players are invited to the Tour Championship. If a player bows out before competition begins, alternates are not invited. Which means, when Jim Furyk sidelined himself due to a wrist injury, the field was down to 29.

Then, during Round 1, Louis Oosthuizen had to withdraw after suffering a hamstring ailment, downsizing the number of entrants again. And, as Day can finish no worse than 28th in this truncated field, English was mathematically eliminated.

True, such a probability for English was a long shot, and one could argue that English as FedEx Cup champ seems ill-fitting. Still, you have to feel for the guy.

Then again, after what he went through the past two seasons, the 26-year-old English is likely just happy to be here.

Sarah Stirk Nipple Gate: Navy Top Leaves Viewers Disappointed

London: Sky Sports management this morning issued a statement  apologizing to subscribers after Sarah Stirk wore a navy dress live on air.  It is believed up to 60,000 horny golfers were left limp after they tuned in to final round coverage of the Valero Texas Open in the hope of getting a glimpse of the legendary Stirk starter buttons. “I pay my subscription, I’m bloody well entitled to see Sarah’s Wimbledon strawberries” said factory worker Paul Manning 52 from Hereford. “I even missed the ten minute freeview, coz my mate Derek tweeted that Stirk was going into the shot centre for ten minutes at 11pm”. The Sky statement read: We apologize unreservedly for the navy dress Sarah wore during last nights broadcast, through which no nipples were visible. This was due to a wardrobe malfunction. Holly Sonders Quits Golf Channel After Contract Talks Fail. Moves To Fox.

Tissues at the ready guys as this will come as a shock to you all that Holly Sonders , the female face of the Golf Channel, has quit and reportedly taken a job with Fox Sports. According to  reports Sonders, who appeared regularly on “Morning Drive” since 2011, could not come to an agreement on a new contract deal with the Golf Channel and was quickly snapped up by Fox Sports where she is expected to work on golf and NFL.
