Heartbreaking. George McNeill Shoots 61 Unaware That Sister Had Died 20 Minutes Before Tee Time

George McNeill nearly stole The Greenbrier Classic with a final round of 61, but heartbreakingly, was unaware that his sister Michele had passed away just 20 minutes before his tee time.

Michele had survived breast cancer in 2012 only for doctors to recently find a tumour had metastisized throughout her brain and established itself in her spine. She had spent the last few weeks in a wheelchair.

George McNeill knew the cancer was aggressive and that his sister did not have time on her side, but he couldn't have known from the time he put his phone away to play in the final round of the Greenbrier to when he returned to the locker room, the worst possible news would come.

Perhaps it was Divine Intervention as McNeill shot a 9-under 61 â€" the lowest round of his life on Tour.

Still unaware of the news McNeill was interviewed after the round revealing that his sister had been on his mind throughout the round.

“It does. It's â€' yeah, you go out and, you know, golf doesn't really mean a whole lot. So it's hard. I played good today. And got finished, and you know, it was a nice middle part of the round. And so like I said, you know, golf doesn't mean a whole lot sometimes.”

A few minutes later, he found out about Michele's passing.  Clearly in shock, McNeill was then faced with a wait to find out if he had to go back and play in a playoff with Angel Cabrera.  As it transpired, mercifully he didn't.

He has now travelled home to be with his family.
